Remo coated skins quality issue? Last viewed: 52 minutes ago

Loading...

I've just recently re-skinned a few drum sets with Remo coated ambassador/emperor skins. I've been using Remo skins for about 8 years, and have never seen them wear through so quickly!

Within 20 minutes of playing (on all three sets, across both the amb. and emp. skins) the coating has started to wear through! It would usually take a few weeks/months before this happens. Using brand new sticks, too.

I emailed the supplier, and they asked me to return the skins. Which is all fine, but I don't happen to have the cash to re-skin 3 drum kits to return the skins...

Has anyone else noticed this happening lately? The skins were bought in December/January/Febuary in different transactions.

Hello!

Yes, indeed, I´ve noticed the same issue with the exact same heads you mentioned. Seems as if quality has decreased with these ones.

And also I noticed something else that has changed: The "carrier" material (foil) underneath the coating is clear! I can remember that older Ambs or Emperors that I´ve used in the past had a white "carrier foil" under the coating - I just don´t know when this has changed exactly.

When I wanted to buy a new snare head the last time I went to my favourite shop, they had run out of Remos, so I got me an Evans head - the equivalent to Remos Ambassador - and found out that the coating is just of a way higher quality and seems to be way more durable.

Yeah I just noticed the same thing this morning when comparing an old skin to the new skin. The old coating was definitely adhered better.

I'm in contact with Remo regarding replacing the skins, if they aren't any better than I will be buying different skins next time. A bit sad, I've been using Remo for quite some time!

This is interesting as I recently installed all new coated Emperors on the top about 3 months ago. The 14" rack tom is starting to show through and it looks like a clear film/color underneath. However, the 16" and 18' FT's just show a little marking and the snares Vintage Emperor which I beat to death the most hardly has any wear at all! So does lack of coating as in my tom, ruin the sound?

I haven't noticed a direct impact on the sound at this stage.

Remo have agreed to a straight swap at my local music store, so heres hoping the next lot sound better - or Aquarian might have to be the go!

This thread has reminded me of a drumhead that came on a slightly used floor tom that came with my first Ludwig kit. The manufacturer, or trade name on the head was "Solar." I've never seen another of these heads since.

It too, had flaking of the coating with each successive hit, but otherwise, seemed to be a good quality head.

While searching for info about Solar, I came across the following link:

I've been using Aquarian heads for the last 10 years now and have used lots of their coated heads. My experience is that their coating lasts a very long time and can stand a lot of use/abuse. I usually play 2 or more times a week and have never worn off the coating on a tom head, though I've broken 2 or 3 over the years by trying to play too fast and hit the head too close to the bearing edge. I have worn the coating off the center of a few snare heads, but that was after at least 6 months of use or more. The very few times I've gotten a bad head from Aquarian, my local store has had me contact Roy Burns and he has sent replacements - no questions asked - and he occasionally sends extra goodies. He likes to hear feedback so he can fix any problems and make things better.

I wish you luck with the new Remo's, but wanted to let you know my experiences with Aquarian just in case they don't hold up.

Thanks mate, I'll be sure to check them out.

Probably about time I tried something else.

I've heard good things about RMV, anyone else using them?

Ok. I'm a die hard Remo user have been my entire life, and thru the years there have been some bad heads from Remo, My favorite heads are white coated in either ambassador or Emperor weight.

So now in all fairness I've tried literally every head from every company comparable to the two Above Remo heads I mentioned. Ludwig and Evans white coatings can take a licking and keep on ticking. Now to my recent observation.

I have fallen head over heels for the New Introduced Vintage Emperor white coated heads, been using them for a little over a year now. But this new one that I just got 5 days ago here is a pic of it after 5 day's of use, Now I play ALOT! but I've laid waste to the white coating.

I'm going to post another pic of this head in another 5 days to show how much if any coating is even left. My hopes are this was just a bad batch which has been the case from time to time.
