Gretsch experts, I ran across a Gretsch Catalina set today. Here is what I found on them,

Catalina Maple series - A new Catalina Maple series with Maple shells that are 7-ply, 7.2mm. Gretsch equipped the shells with "Gretsch Classic" features and hardware, including 30-degree bearing edges, fully adjustable Gretsch ball-and-socket tom holder with 12.7mm tom arms, 9020-style mounting brackets and the famous 5-lug configuration (a standard Gretsch feature for over 50 years). Available in two configurations - a 6-piece shell pack set and a 5-piece shell pack set. Add-on drums are also available.

These have the square badge with the corners knocked off. Says Made in China on it. Seven piece set(two bass drums) for 450.00. Would be a great re-finishing project for me. Are these worth the price or should I pass on them due to the Made in China badge,

These Gretsch Catalina sets are pretty popular due to price .

I saw a band in a club with 5 pc set, that was a natural wood (maple?) looking finish, and it had a great sound to it.

He had Aquarian heads on it, and it seems he knew how to tune his drums.

Hi Jeff,

Those maple Catalina's are very popular. I had the Catalina Jazz kit in WMP (not maple). Frankly, with proper tuning, the little beast sounds great. I just sold it when I came across a mid 70's Gretsch 20, 12, 14 with the COB snare.

As good as the little 18, 12, 14 sounds, there is no comparison between the two.

If you're planning on flipping the kit, I'd say that might be a bit much at $450.00. At least around here.

If you just want a double bass kit to screw around with, that isn't junk, for cheap. There you are.

Anyone know when the Catalinas were made?

I just need a kit to do some finishing on for fun. I would like to sell it for what I got into it. So, 450 for the drums + 100 or so for stain and lacquer = 550.00. Who would buy it for 550, 600? Keep in mind it will look brand new.

I grabbed a Catalina in 26" 18" 14" in galaxy black and it sounds huge. Trying to sell it now. How far down are you Jeff. PM if you're interested at all.

A few years back I had a Gretsch Catalina Birch with the dark walnut finish. Sizes were 8, 10, 12, 14 toms, 14 snare, 22 bass. These were in very good condition when I sold them and got $$350.00 for just the shells. Bought them new for $700.00 at Guitar Center in about 2005.

Those are REAL recent... last few years. I flipped a 26, 13, 16, 18 (or maybe 14, 16 - can't remember) about a year ago. I think I paid $200 and sold for $300 after I cleaned 'em up.

Even looking new and with double basses you might just break even... maybe. I've noticed they don't retain their value, much.
