How many plies on '53 Radio King? Last viewed: 7 hours ago

Loading...

I have a '53 Slingerland Gene Krupa 7 x 14 Radio King. I can't tell by looking at it how many plies it has. Does anyone know what the number of plies should be on this drum? Also, if you know the make-up of the plies, that would be helpful. It sounds like a maple drum, at least to my ears.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Stephen, is that the one you have listed for sale? That is a single ply shell with re-rings. Nice drum

Yes, Andrew. A potential buyer wants to know, and my eyes aren't what they used to be. So it's a single ply maple, correct?

Thanks so much.

the easiest way, I find, to identify the single ply and the 3 ply is the color of the interior, especially if just looking at photos on a ebay listing for example. The single ply maple is much lighter in color to the 3 ply with Mahogany inner ply. It's probably not fool proof though

Thanks again gentlemen. It's a drum I don't really want to get rid of, but I have a Cloud Badge RK (same size), that sounds identical to it, and I'm trying to trim my collection down to the essentials.

You all are great.

Great drum! Another way to tell single ply is the wood grain pattern will match from outside to inside.
