quick question about Aquarian American Vintage heads Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Loading...

I have a 1966 Gretsch round badge

I don't have a whole lot of trouble getting Ambassadors on them .....but they are a little snug

I was wondering if anyone has experience with these heads and if they are indeed a bit larger and will sit on the shell more comfortably

they are a tad pricey ...so before I make the plunge I wanted to see what you guys think

I have heard them and think they sound very nice and warm.... especially when tuned a bit high the way I like my kit

but it is the fit I am concerned with

will it be a noticeable difference from the fit of an Ambassador ?

thanks in advance

you guys are the best in the biz

Here's some info from Aquarian's website. The American Vintage heads do indeed have a slightly larger hoop, for drums that are a tight fit. I have tried them, and it does make a difference in the fit.

I have a Black Nitron factory wrapped RB 14x14 on which Remo heads are very tight; Aquarian American Vintage are less so; Evans coated, single ply heads fit great and sound darker, rounder than the Remo Ambassadors.

FYI

Never play it the same way once.

I've used them on alot of snare drums. Yes, they are a little larger and fit alot easier. I love the vintage sound that you get from them . They also "feel" better on my old hands when I play them. I've never tried them on toms or a bass drum.

I have a set on my late 50s Slingerland Super Gene Krupa snare. It's a little out of round, so a standard head is almost impossible to slip on. The American Vintage fits fairly easily. I also put one easily onto my Radio King after prying off the Ambassador that was on it.

By the way, I have them all the way around my late 50s Slingerland kit, with the exception of Aquarian Classic Clears on the resonant side of the toms. The kick is low and boomy, both snares sound great, and the toms are nice and full. I tune my toms a little on the low side, though.

Sorry for getting long-winded.

Lynn

You're very welcome! Congratulations on your purchase, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Did you order the snare set and a pair for each drum? I was told by a vintage drum guy at Atlanta Pro Percussion that using them as batter and reso is heavenly. Sure sounds amazing on my BD. It sounds a little weak up close, but I had a teenager from the church youth group over for a lesson the other day and was shocked at how boomy it was when I walked to the other side of the house while he warmed up. Excited

a guy I know has them on a 60s Ludwig kit and he has the mediums on batter and thins on reso

and they sound amazing

but he got them for the sound and not for the tightness of other heads ....thats why I was asking here

I ordered mediums for tom batters kick batter and snare batter

and thins for tom resos

Good deal! I think the guy in Atlanta was saying the mediums all around were the ticket...if I remember correctly. I keep forgetting that they come in two weights, so I forgot to mention that. I'm sure your setup will sound great. I went with medium all the way. I think the Classic Clears are a medium weight as well.

Anyway, let us know how you like them.
