I saw one for sale on the dfo forum,12x22, old Gretsch with calf heads. Real nice drum but the price is a bit steep. Not that its not worth it, just more than I have to spend at this point in time. Wanted to get some feedback on these shallower depth drums before I make a commitment.
12" deep bass drums Last viewed: 3 hours ago
Hmm...you could always go for a "Scotch" marching bass drum and convert it to "outfit" use...those would be available in heads sizes up to 28" (or larger!) and be 8" or 10" deep.....if you went large diameter you could get the loudness factor back for un-miked situations yet still gain frontal space with the shallow depth and you can usually pick them up cheaper than a regular bass drum. Because its a "marching" drum, people think its undesireable, so its worth less......which is good for the rest of us that will spend the time to convert and use them. :D
I've owned three different 20X12 drums.. two ludwigs, both sounded great and one premier, that sounded even better.. Very handy size and I don't think it reacts any different than a 20X14.. The sound is a bit "shorter" and more focused, the ludwigs lacked a bit of volume, but the premier wasn't any problem on that point.. a very good size

That probably because the Premier was birch....birch projects a bit better than mahogany does I've found.....
