1920's Walburg and Auge Drum Kit Project Last viewed: 5 hours ago

Just picked up this sweet baby this Monday. Many of you may have seen this kit on ebay. The seller gave me a great deal on it because he didn't need to ship it.

26, 13, 14 Size config. It just needs a good clean up and new heads. It came with the bass drum consollette tom/everything mount.

Spoke with the owner of CT Pro Percussion and is going to tack on new bottom heads for me.

I took off the top head on the 13" to take a peek inside. The old head was stuck on there pretty good... but what a well made drum set! Other things that impressed me were the bass drum tension rods. They have thread protectors build into them. I'm sure it helps preventing them from getting bent too.

It's like W&A were the Duesenburg (car) of drum sets.

I placed a new 13" REMO Clear Amb on the top just to see if it would go on OK... and sat on the drum beautifully. I actually might put clear heads on the tops just so I can see inside. (traditionalists... feel free to put comments here.) :)

The 14" tom has a wood hoop with a W&A badge like the bass drum hoops. Someone must have replaced the 13 with a metal hoop at some point.

The lugs are the same as found on early Gretsch drums. Did W&A make these for Gretsch? .. or vise versa?

Can't wait to start working on them... and REALLY can't wait to play them.

Will do! It shouldn't take too much time... only 3 drums. I'll be dropping off the toms to CT PP early July. I'll keep the pictures coming though. :)

The W&A's cleaned up nicely. I can't believe how well these drums are built.

- Edges of the wrap are tacked down.

- Not one seem or ply has separated (Something I've had to deal with on every one of my Slingerlands)

I still might try them as concert toms before I make the bottom head re-skin plunge.

If the tacked heads are intact and are pig hide you

can wet them from the inside and set in the sun or over a small lamp and see if they tighten up. Worked on a Rolling Bomber tom I have.

They usually have paint on the out side so don't wet there.

Thanks! They are somewhat intact... one of them has pulled from the tacks on one side. The other is very loose and torn on the edges.

The W&A cleaned up nicely... but things got real interesting when I tried putting new heads on it.

The bass drum is a 27".

The 14 tom won't take a modern head. I can force it but don't want to.

The 13 tom is the only drum that will take a modern head... and it's still pretty tight.

This kit will have to have calf skin head all around... as intented. Matt from CT Pro Percussion is going to help me out with this.

Here are some more pics of it cleaned up.

As promised, here are the pics of the W&A... all cleaned up with new heads.

It plays BEAUTIFULLY and sounds AMAZING!!! I'll take some video of it being played and post it soon.

I ran into a few issues that I had to resolve.

1. The bass drum is just over 27". I learned this when I went to put on new 26" heads. (It looked like a 26 when I bought it.) :)

26" or 28" would not work on this bass drum. Did some investigation and found out that tympani heads are made in 27... due to the different measurements... they wouldn't work either. However, there is one tympani head that fit... a 26 extended tympani head.

I brought the drum to National Music in Woburn MA and their tympani expert helped me find a head that fit and helped me put them on. Great store... great people.

2. The 14" tom would not accept a standard 14" head. I heard that Aquarian made a head called 'Vintage American' which were a little bit larger in diameter to solve this problem. Boston Drum Center in Acton MA had them in stock. I brough the drum there to see if it would fit. Problem solved. Thank you Boston Drum Center and Aquarian for making this drum come back to life.

3. The 13" tom rim would not accept the oversized Aquarian Vintage American. A REMO vintage A worked just fine. Problem solved.

4. The tacked on heads were too far gone and had to be removed. I'm throwing around a few options... but for now... I'm leaving them as concert toms. They sound great. I had to cover the tacked section of the shell with something I'm too embarrassed to mention... but it helps the aesthetics, protects the bottom baring edge and protects the corner of the wrap. It can be easily removed without causing ANY damage to the drums.

O... when I was at Boston Drum Center... they had a 1920's?? W&A snare drum for $200.... I had to get it to complete the kit. It too sounds amazing... might be the best sounding snare I have. If you have any knowledge/info of this snare.. please let me know.

Hope you guys dig it!
