I bought this on eBay. It was advertised early 1900's and having a solid oak shell. It may be a ply shell - looks like it. It's only slightly out of round 13 5/16" to 13 7/16" = not bad really. The shell is 3" deep & the wood counterhoops are 1.5".
There's XXVI cut into one of the counterhoops.....I'm thinking (26 as in 1926?). Also in what looks to be original pencil inside the shell there is 26 inscribed. A couple of clues there as to the age maybe. Gretsch's Professioinal model drums were made into the 1920's.
I retucked the heads (the seller mounted them like 'banjo' heads) - bearly had enough to wrap around the original wood flesh-hoops. After cursing and jumping around a little I was able to mount them. I didn't do anything to the drum other than clean the shell & hoops with a little mild soap solution.
The snares & snare hardware are completely functional & in good shape. The drum sounds not too bad so far........it has to dry out a bit more.
I'm happy with it - a pretty cool little drum.
Now what I need is one of those Civil War drums.....an Eagle maybe?
