1930's Ludwig Super Sensitive Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Another addition to the Ludwig snare collection. A 1930's Ludwig & Ludwig Super Sensitive with a beautiful mahogany shell. The drum came complete and I only found one non-original screw on a snare guard. The original hard case and calf heads were also included. To my knowledge, I'm the 3rd owner and the drum has spent much of its life packed away in storage. The drum only needed a light cleaning and some heads.

One interesting note - The case has slots that the extended snare guards drop into. The drum is actually suspended by the guards inside the case. I noticed this caused a hairline crack in one of the tube lugs where the guard was attached. A poor design, considering the weight of the drum.

Two questions for the experts - (1) Is there a way to narrow down the date? (2) The four tension rods to which the snare guards attach are wrapped with a heavy paper to protect the threads... was this the way the drum was issued, or was this just added by a previous owner? Thanks.

The 1933 catalog scan mentions an internal tone control which this drum does not have... so, would that place the drum between 1930 and 33?

From my experience and consulting with others I think your drum is 1930-32 for a few reasons...1. The Super-Sensitive model was introduced in the fall 1929 Ludwig Drummer insert...the first SSs had the engraved Super-Sensitive on the bottom rim...yours looks like the stamped Super-Sensitive...2. Tone controls were introduced around 1932-33 so i'm thinking 1930-32 for your drum...

I have also seen paper, plastic and leather between the clips and the tension rods at either side of the Super mechanism. I'm thinking that's after market although it does seem logical to do this so if it was a factory thing then the leather pieces do seem the most likely way to go.

Has the finish been restored? If not, that's a very clean finish for its age.

Another difference that I've noticed is on the wood shell SSs the order goes: badge, Sensitive mechanism (top), Super mechanism (bottom) but on metal shell SSs it's: badge, Super mechanism, Sensitive mechanism

Nice score!

Thanks Mike. Yes, the wood looks original with only one panel showing some slight flaking of the finish. I did notice the order difference when comparing the wood drum to photos of your metal shell drums in the Ludwig Book. Thanks for the input.
