1930's Slingerland Sparkling Gold Artist Model Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Hi, everyone

I just finished this restoration and thought I'd post a few photos. The drum has a solid maple shell, nickel hardware, HR Todd muffler and nickel hardware. The gold finish is way nicer than most I have encountered. Sparkling Gold was rather unstable and was prone to spotting, freckling, and splitting. This example has a few areas that are slightly darker. This is a non- Tone Flange model.

Just beautiful Mark. I love these old Slingerland snares. And solid maple. So nice. Thanks for the pictures! :) The drums you and Mike restore and post are just fantastic. Thanks very much!

Slingerland gold sparkle with nickel hardware is one of the greatest finish combinations ever, in my opinion. Beautiful.

Thanks, everyone! I'm glad you all like the drum. It's always fun to display them here, post-restoration. As far as how many of these are out there, it seems that there werent all that many made between 1928 and 1935. At least compared to similar drums made by Ludwig & Ludwig and Leedy.

Most of the Artist models (wood versions) were equipped with Tone Flange devices up until about 1933 or so. Probably the time they switched from mahogany shells to maple. However, a Tone Flange could be ordered up until as late as 1937, which was the Radio King era. I have never seen a Broadcaster or Radio King fitted with one but who knows....?
