1938 Double Flanged Swingster Info please Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Hello,

I have this drum that I am selling and I don't really feel that I have enough information to list this properly. I found what I think is the right model in the Rob Cook Ludwig book. So, I believe this is a 1938 WFL" Double Flanged Swingster". It's a 7"X15" Mahogany shell. It has a silver WFL Drum Co. badge and on the bottom of the badge it reads, William F Ludwig "President". One of the most important questions I have.... is this a one ply drum ? It's difficult for me to tell. Most of the later one ply drums that I own are much heavier in weight. To me this looks like it's one ply. I have included some photos. There is no re-ring separation and the drum to my amazement is in round. The bearing edges are in great condition too. The only draw back is I do not have the correct strainer for the drum. I did retrofit a new Ludwig Pioneer strainer to the drum which did not require any extra holes to install. There are no mods...... The butt plate says " Pat Pend" which is a little confusing due to the fact that I thought from 1917 onward the butt plates had the WFL stamp on it. The exterior is in good shape too. It has some wear , but nothing you would not expect from a drum of this age. Any help, info and approximate value would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

A few more photos. So the approximate value? Are you 100% sure this is 3 ply? Am I correct in assuming mahogany poplar mahogany?

Thanks.

Yes, I was guessing about the same value . The drum really does sound quite good. I've never played a 7"X15" . I must say I'm surprised by the versatility and sound.

Thanks for your input.

This drum has a pretty thick seam on the outside as well as the interior seam. That is why I thought it was single ply. That and by looking at the bearing edge it's impossible to detect ply separation. Looks like one piece but as you have stated , it must be a 3 ply...... Actually it looks identical to a 20's Ludwig bass drum that I have which I'm also trying to decipher if that might be one ply. Very hard to tell with Mahogany..... Poplar is much lighter in color so you would think that would jump out visually as the middle ply.....
