1941 ludwig 28" bass Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Hi guys, i'm going tomorrow to look at some vintage gear from a local drummer who has retired. He is letting me look at some vintage lugwigs, first set is from the early 40's(he's claiming 1941) with a period correct leedy snare 14x7 with an acrolite type shell(?).

Also a later 60's ludwig standard drum set with zildjian cymbals(i'm knowledgeable with cymbals so that is not a problem). Not sure of finish.

My question is what kind of money should i offer for this stuff, i think the standard kit is complete with a snare and hardware. and the early 40's stuff is just drums, bass-tomtom-floor tom-and the above mentioned snare?

I don't want to low ball him but i also don't want to over pay since i will probably sell some of the drums, i'm mostly interested in some of the cymbals.

Thanks, Gary.

Somewhere between not much and a whole lot.

Just foolin.... it's really hard to give advice sight unseen, with second hand descriptions.

Hope it works out well for the both of you.

Thanks, i just got back a little bit ago and wow this guy has a collection that is very large, a lot of early 1900 marching snares and such. But the 41 ludwig set is in really nice condition from what i saw of it.

Here are the specs, 28" bass drum, 16 ft both double headed with imperial lugs and what i think is a 12" tom with original bottom head that is not tunable. Bass and ft has original calfskins in very good condition. Those three are an original set, then he has 2 other toms like the 12 both different sizes and different badge but same wrap(WMP with some yellowing but nice and tight with little or no damage). Honestly i'm not sure of the sizes of the other two one looks smaller and the other looks bigger than the 12".

Also included in the set is a leedy metal shell(not sure if it's aluminum or what) 14x7 beaver tail lugs and engraved single flange hoops with the name Leedy engraved. Also the original ludwig bass pedal and possibly an original snare stand, not sure on that though. All mounting hardware for the toms but i'm not sure about the bass spurs i forgot to ask.

Below are pics of bass drum and snare drum. Like i said the bass has imerial lugs as well as all the toms and floor tom. Sorry for the bad pics i didn't have flash on and the house was a little dark.

Let me know if there is any resale value in these and BTW i did score some nice 50's light A 14" hihats and what i think is a kingston 22" ride(2300g) that is just dark and trashy sounding! I'll be posting that in the cymbal section.

Thanks for looking, Gary.

Those are some cool drums. Those old Imperial lugs are killer. That bass drum should sound monsterous!

Regarding resale potential - it obviously depends on what you pay for them. The negatives would be the tacked head toms, and the BD is bigger than most would want to gig with. They would be most desireable as a display piece for a serious collector. You'd probably maximize on your profit by listing the Leedy SD seperately.

I'd sure like to see more pics of this guy's collection! Keep us posted.

Hey thanks, I can get them for 750usd. Any idea of value of the snare by itself? I'm guessing its pretty rare, but I could be wrong.

From Rocketman

Those old Imperial lugs are killer.

Imperial lugs are my favorite lugs ever. I was introduced to a Ludwig rep a few years ago at Drum HQ in STL, and the first question I asked him was "Will you ever bring back Imerial lugs for the toms and bass?", and he answered, "probably not in our lifetimes".

What about the Ludwig Standard?

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

He had a real nice set in what i think is blue strata, and a mismatched set. Asking 1200 for each kit(not sure if that's good or not) included was hardware but not sure if it was original or not. The matching blue strata(?) kit was in really good condition though. Had original snare and i think pedals too.

Yes, the snare is collectable. Don't clean it if you plan on selling (never touch that drum with steel wool). It is probably nickel over brass (or perhaps chrome over brass). A little research will yield the correct model name. I would look it up, but my leedy book is currently packed away due to remodeling.

The kit looks very nice and I totally dig the imperial lugs. Yes, the bass is a bit large (most preferred the 26 during that era), but it intact should command close to the purchase price minus the snare. I would need to see better photos to get a better idea as to what you have there.

The Leedy snare drum is brass, plated with probably nickle but perhaps chrome (can't be sure from the pics).
