Hi guys,
Picked up this great old Radio King from John (Purdie Shuffle) a couple of months ago. Its a 3-ply, 7 X 14 shell with the aluminum/white cloud badge.
I've pulled everything apart, cleaned much of the hardware, repainted the badge, stripped the old stain off the inner and outer plies, sanded it down, and filled an extra hole. Just wanted to share some before pics. Hope to stain the outer maple ply today.

Here are some pics of my progress:
1) Shell after being stripped and sanded. I used Citri-Strip which worked pretty well and had an almost pleasant citrus scent.
2) Inner Mahogany ply. I used some Howard Feed-N-Wax wood polish and conditioner here because the wood was pretty dry.
3) Filing the extra hole above the strainer holes, so that it will accept a dowel.
4) Dowel filling hole.
5) Repainted badge and polished hardware. I used some simichrome polish with #7445 light duty cleansing Scott Brite hand pads to polish. From what I have found, these pads are finer than 0000 Steel wool and are 1200 - 1500 grit equivalent. They are supposed to be excellent for light cleaning and are one of the least aggressive hand pads (i sure hope so). They seemed to work ok.
Nice drum... It will be interesting to follow your progress.

Stained the shell yesterday, conditioned the wood this morning, added the re-painted badge and snapped a couple of quick pics. Went with a very light stain to try to see the wood grain. The darker area around the holes should be covered by hardware. All in all, Im happy with the way it turned out. Ill take some better pics when the hardware is all attached.
James the stain looks great. Looks nice in the lighter shade. Did you hand paint the badge yourself? Amazing detail~! I could never paint or hand letter very well. Anyway nice job.

Thanks very much! Yes I hand painted the lettering on the badge myself. I wouldnt want to do it again, it was a real pain in the neck :).

James do you mind sharing info how you painted it? What kind of brush, paint etc.... That's talent and I really admire those that can do stuff like that. I thought about painting the gold background on mine but I'm terrible at hand lettering anything that small. Plus I need to have a big mag glass to just see anything that small in detail. LOL.

Glenn: Thanks for the kind words about the hand lettering. I used a Loew-Cornell soft comfort liner brush (pic one) and modified the bristles with an exacto knife to get a fine enough point (pic two). The paint I used was Americana Gloss Enamel (white). I used my exacto to very gently rub away any paint that strayed outside of the letter depressions on the badge. To tell you the truth, it was a bit of a pain in the butt. A magnifying glass would have made things much easier :)
