1960 Slingerland RK help Last viewed: 23 hours ago

I bought this drum a couple months ago and am thinking of selling it. The holidays offered my first opportunity to clean, rehead, inspect and tune the drum up. It sounds fantastic! However, I originally planned to remove the "2" next to the badge. Upon closer inspection, it appears factory! Then, I noticed that the badge itself is not centered between the lugs! Never seen that either??? Perhaps noted as a factory 2nd?

I don't know. Any input?

It is the early Black Sparkle wrap with purple flecks in it. Tight seem, solid shell, all correct and original. This has me a little stumped.

There was a recent post on this forum (or the DFO) about the centering of Slingerland badges. Turns out they apparently often weren't real concerned about getting it dead center. Also I don't believe they were selling anything back then as "seconds" because, honestly, anything they produced that looked reasonably okay went out the door as "firsts" and was usually accepted by a less discerning generation of drummers.

My guess is that the "2" was applied by a former owner, possibly a school or orchestra as part of their inventory system. The badge is pretty far off but not necessarily related to the "2" being there although the off centered-ness does lend itself to putting that number there.

I didn't think a factory 2nd was possible either. The inventory number is possible. I just wondered because the more I looked at it, the badge was so off, that the 2 next to it made me not remove it. Otherwise, the badge being off center would look even more odd.

Nice drum, I could use a nice "Super" strainer. This one is too clean to part.Bet of luck on what you decide to do.

None of the badges on my Slingerlands are perfectly centered. Some are closer than others. But all are off. Cloud to 70's football. That Sir is one cool snare drum! You have some nice gems in your collection!

That's just a number added later by a school, most likely. Slingerland did some sloppy work but they would not have spray painted a stenciled number like that.

So should I leave the 2 on it, or remove it, and if I remove it, how?

Personally, I'd remove it. A citrus base stripper used carefully might do it. It's tricky, though and will need a good polishing after.

I would remove it as well. Clean the area area around the "2" with a micro fibre towel and hot water. This will help with when white comes off. Won't mix with the grime. Doubt the 2 has damaged the wrap. Hot water may very well work to remove it as well. Products made for cleaning plastic would my choice over any paint remover as a first try. Test small area and see how it goes.

I think my paint stripper advice was too drastic. I agree with Creighton- a polish would be the first step. It just might remove that "2".
