Now here is something that i'm curious to hear opinions on..

This drum kit was originally posted by it's original owner over 3 weeks ago.. Fellow forum member "Funky poodle" who lives in Quebec City , (I live 3 hrs away in Montreal) had sent me the original link to the ad for this kit by it's original owner when i was looking for a vintage MIJ kit.. He sent it to me because the original owner was selling , and sold it for $450 Cdn. and thought i could benefit from it, seeing as how it was for sale at such a great price.. I immediately called the original owner and he told me that it was sold, as he had probably broken the news to many other callers much to his dismay, i'm sure..

Now the current owner of this kit has posted this ad on my local classifieds known as kijiji, up for resale.. He's asking for best offer..

For those of you who aren't French speaking (I'm Trilingual ;)),the sale is for the original 3 piece Keystone badge kit, with an extra 12" B/O badge from the 70's..

Snare is being sold separately, but is in the pic anyway..The sizes are what's going to make this kit a tough sell, along with the mods that were done, (i.e- extra holes for a 70's tom mount) and what i assume to be a missing front hoop, T-'s and claws, and rear telescoping spurs.. The configuration is a rare 20-13-16, (at least i think they're pretty rare ?) minus the 70's 12" tom.. Also, i may be seeing things, but i think the 12" tom might be a rewrap..On closer inspection, underneath the tom bracket, looks to be a difference in color in the wrap suggesting fading ? This also may be indicative of the slightly mangled b/o badge ?

Now my question to all you fine gentlemen is this..

How much would guys offer him, regardless of the mods and missing parts,,and not including the 12" ?

This is where curiosity may kill, or at least, injure the cat .. :p

The wrap looks original to me the grommets haven't been tampered with.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

For the missing parts and extra holes I would only pay $3-400. Maybe less. That's just my opinion. I would be looking at it from a flipping perspective and all that would go into plugging holes, patching the wrap, and searching for new parts.

I might go as much as 700.00 USD. The bass drum modification to the center post mount kinda kills it for me. It looks like the small tom has a wrap issue at the seam. Can't really tell for sure.

On second thought, Curtis is probably closer with regards to price. I picked up a mid 60's Ludwig set for about 300. After new heads, new bearing edges (they were awful!), shipping for those edges, new drum bags, and picking up missing parts on ebay, the total cost has been closer to 1300.00.

Now, mind you, I have a '66 Super classic set in champagne sparkle that sounds amazing and looks showroom new, but getting there was not cheap! I had a lot of fun restoring it and will play it for a while before deciding whether or not to sell it. Keep repair / replacement parts costs in mind when offering a bid.

Thanks to all for your thoughts.. I think i may pass on the drums..

Drilled holes in a 60's Ludwig is a no no, and i personally think decreases the value by a significant amount..Also, 20-13-16 is a little "meh" for me.. If it were a 20-12-14, or 22-13-16, then i would make him an offer regardless of the missing parts, because i actually have most of the missings parts on another player's kit that i restored, with period correct T's and claws from the 60's..The only thing i'd be missing is the front hoop, and rear spurs.. I'll wait until another "great deal" pops up..

I just picked up and finished restoring a vintage Pearl kit and haven't even played it live yet..

Thanks to all for your thoughts and advice..This is why i love this forum, friendly and expert advice ;)
