1964 Ludwig drum head / cymbal recommendations Last viewed: 6 hours ago

Hi,

I'm making great progress on getting the components together to replicate Ringo's #3 kit. I'll post pictures shortly, but wanted to ask for recommendations on drum heads and cymbals.

The heads I'd like to order new from Ludwig's reproduction series. Any recommendations on models?

The cymbals I'm planning on buying vintage and am leaning toward Paiste. Any recommendations on weights? Also, which logo style should I be looking for to try to get cymbals from '63-'64?

Thanks,

John

Calf heads. It's what he used and carries the best sounds to these ears.

Thanks for your posts. On the cymbals, should there be any uniformity in terms of weight? Should they all be thins or mediums, or can they be mixed to personal taste? If the latter, any recommendations on what weights each particular cymbal should be?

they come in all weights, thin, med thin, medium. the one pictured is a 20" medium, I'm a hard hitter and like medium weights, since your using this on a beatles recreation, thin or medium thins would be good, they aren't cheap pre serial numbered 602's. If your doing a beatles recreation why are you using Paiste, ringo played zildjians?

Thanks for your note. You are definitely not kidding about 602 prices being high.

I'm still in the research part of this, but from the reading I've done online and in Beatles Gear I was under the impression that he started with Paiste and then sometime in '64 started using Zildjian. However, I'm not locked into one or the other, so if there's greater consensus that Zildjian would be appropriate for his #3 kit, which he got in May of '64, I would go that route.

BTW, it surprises me how well documented the other three Beatles' instruments are compared to Ringo's. I wish he'd let someone have access to his kits and do really detailed photos of them. For one thing, I'd like to know whether the #3 kit had serial numbers or not and also get a better sense for when it was made.

Again, thanks for your input. If anyone else has thoughts on the Paiste vs. Zildjian issue, feel free to share.

Thanks for the link. Very interesting, especially the part about the 15" hi hats. I've run across other sources that have reported them as 14".

Any consensus on the amount of weight difference between the two high-hat cymbals? I've been reading up on this and am wondering when the technique of using a heavier/thicker bottom started gaining popularity?

(This is probably an appropriate time to reiterate that I'm not a musician, let alone a drummer and that I'm building this kit for my wife who is a musician and wants to start learning the drums.)

Thanks to all who have been so helpful in enabling me to get up to speed.
