My guess is the older drums have mahogany exteriors so it would be tough to get a smooth finish with paint unless you did a lot of prep work. The drums Ludwig intended to paint had maple exteriors to give a smoother finish to paint on, they used mahogany for wrapped drums because the more open grain of that wood held the glue better.
