Just won an e-bay auction for a 65 Ludwig Silver Sparkle Snare with a pre patent "Classic" style strainer.
It needs snares, are there a specific type that this style strainer needs?

Yes, there are specific snares for the P87 strainer. There were a few different options available. Replacements for your drum's originals would be one of the following:
12-strand gut snares, 15" = Ludwig part # L-1105
12-strand wire snares, 15" = Ludwig part # L-1107
Both are still available as new replacement parts. A set of gut snares will cost roughly $75 or $80 from a Ludwig dealer. A wire set will run around $60.
In other words, I hope you don't need a new set! ;)
