1965 Ludwig Club Date Value Please Last viewed: 35 minutes ago

I have an opportunity to purchase a 1965 Ludwig Club Date kit, complete and original in excellent condition. 14 x 20 bass 14 x 5 snare 8x 12 tom. All dated 1965, same month. The floor tom is not matched, 16 x 16 dated 1958. Complete with original cymbal arm and snare stand. Color is BDP. Seller asking $1100 w/o shipping (probably another couple hundred). The kit is beautiful, but....is the price right (I thought so but need more input)

Thanks so much for your opinions!

I'm guessing this is the kit in TX CL that's been for sale for a while. W/out the 14" FT the $ seems high - especially since you'll be shipping the kit. Since BDP is a rare wrap for CD's this makes up for this a tad. As is I'd make on offer & see where it takes you - I wouldn't pay more than 850, roughly speaking -

If the snare is a Jazz Fest and if the 14x14 floor tom was included, then I think it would be a good deal. Of course, the kit could have come originally as a Combo outfit with no floor tom, but those might have been a 22" bass drum and 13" tom. Actually...if the floor tom included in this kit is a 16x16 from 1958, I think it might a Super Classic with separate tension Classic lugs, as I believe the Club Date floor toms during that time period were 15x12. Do you know what kind of snare and floor tom are included? Do you have any pics?

I think it's a bit high. Last year I purchased a sky blue club date, complete w/ 5.5x14 pioneer matching snare for $700. That was a good deal, but without the much-coveted 14" floor tom I'm not sure I'd bite. Those alone can go for $400 on ebay.

here's the listing : http://dallas.craigslist.org/ndf/msg/3210272756.html

not a JF snare.

By the way - I paid about 1100 for a complete '66 CD BDP w/ JF with a lot of other stuff. I felt like I paid more (than I normally would) for the kit since it is in very good condition. The kit your looking at does LOOK to be in very nice condition - but I'd ask for more pics -

Agreed. The kit here looks nice, but with a Pioneer and Super Classic floor tom, I know I wouldn't spring $1100 + shipping for it....maybe $1000 shipped is more like it.

IMO, it's worth what you're willing to pay IF it's what you want.

For a point of ref., I sold three Club Date kits in 2011.

1) 1965: 14x20, 14x14, 8x12, & Pioneer SD. Just the shells that still needed refinished (they were black laquer). $400 picked up at my house. Some (but not all) of the hardware was included. I had bought this one cheap off CL but another member here wanted to finish them himself (CIBdrummer).

2) 1971: 14x20, 14x14, 8x12. Gold sparkle, and all I did was fix a few things, detail it, and put on newer heads. $750 + shipping on eBay. I rescued this one from a leaky metal shed here in SE Kansas.

3) 1965: 14x20, 14x14, 8x12. Champagne sparkle, and ditto #2 above. $850 + shipping on eBay. I rescued this one out of a garage in SE Kansas.

Hope this helps,

Bill

Bill...I also believe this to be true. Good point.

I'm with the rest of the gang... $1100 seems a bit steep. There are better deals out there. I just got a BDP downbeat kit in about the same condition for less than half of that. Unless it's the one you just can't live without, then be patient and the right one will come your way.

Thanks so much everyone. Really appreciate the fb and totally agree. I actually found a kit closer to what I've been searching for (69 Ludwig BDP 5 pc) at a fantastic price. Found it with a heads up from one of the awesome members here. Glad I waited. Thanks again!
