1967 Rogers R380 Last viewed: 6 hours ago

Hello all, may be looking at a 1967 Rogers R380 set in white marine pearl. It's based off a 22", but I can't find anything on the site or elsewhere to verify that they even offered a R380 in 67. I do know it is the Japanese made product. Is it worth 350. with snare in good condition, and can anyone help with how to verify its stated age? Thanks.

The first generation R-380 sets were made by Yamaha(starting 1968, The Rogers Book). The second generation R-380's were made in Taiwan(1980). Perhaps others can give details to explain any differences.

From Fuse

Speaking from just my own perspective, here's what I'd say...If it's a second generation kit made in Taiwan, then, no, it's probably not worth $350.If it's a first generation kit coming out of Japan, that's another thing. A lot of the worth depends on what you want to do with the set. If you're buying it for yourself to play, then I'd think that it likely would be worth the $350. Even though those drums were made in Asia for an American company, if they were made in Japan, the quality is likely pretty good. A number of Japanese companies did a lot of "contract" work like that for American companies, and the stuff coming out of Japan in that era was well-made. My advice would be to play the drums and see how they sound. If you like how they sound, buy 'em.IF you're buying them to try to flip them for a profit, that is yet another thing. You can't really resell them as Rogers drums because they aren't really Rogers, and someone willing to pay good money for vintage Rogers wants real Rogers. So, that would leave you with trying to sell them as vintage Yamahas, and I would imagine that the resale value on vintage Yamaha isn't that high. And you'd also face the problem of trying to sell them as Yamahas when they weren't really Yamahas either. So, I don't think they're drums that you can pick up cheap and then resell for a profit. In fact, if you're buying them just to resell them, I think you'd be lucky if you could make back your original investment. So, it all depends on what you want the drums for.

Thanks much for the feedback. Would like to have a Rogers for the collection, but this may not be the right set even for that.

Say - did you win that recent auction of white ones on the bay? My vote would be that a 68 R380 would be a very worthy addition as a Rogers sample, though many would disagree. It was engineered by Rogers, though build by Yamaha in Japan. It is one of the first times, perhaps THE first for an American company, to outsource to Asia for a drum with an "American" badge. In my opinion, this gives it historical value. In addition, I have read up alot on these and those who are informed all say that this late 60s MIJ was head and shoulders above/light years ahead and superior to the other MIJs of that era (like the Pearl and Star kits).

For these reasons, I am acquiring one soon and when restored, it will look pretty much identical to that recent one on the bay - though I won't let so much blasted dust build up on her!

Here is a nice one in what appears to be good condition. He is off on the 1980 thing. They are late 60's or 1970. Fine Yamaha drums. I had a set that I bought new in 1970 with my paper route money and just sold them to a friend last year.

Indeed that is a nice kit - and the price is fair considering the wrap is intact, snare included, stands included - etc. wonder if the HH cymbals are included. That might be a steal of a deal.

If I were in the market and did not yet have my next R380 identified, I would consider it. I am getting a white (WMP) for a very low price due to split wrap on every drum and am very committed to it.

This may be a good kit to throw up in the FOR SALE section though.
