1968/69 Rogers R360 COS/1st model Last viewed: 1 hour ago

I saw that the Rogers R360 thread was revived .. NICE DRUM idrumforfun/Mark! .. you brought that one back!, so...

... I thought you guys would enjoy seeing the 1968/69 FIRST MODEL production of the Rogers/Yamaha R360 as it uses ALL Rogers parts! The only items that Yamaha supplied were possibly the COS shell itself, and most definitely the tone control/muffler. Otherwise, all actual Rogers parts! Of note:

The lugs are Rogers cast Beavertails

The strainer is a Rogers #393 Bantam with a Dynasonic tension screw! Have a look at the "D" stamped into it.

The hoops have an embossed "R" both top and bottom... if you look carefully at the pics you will see it. I've not seen that on Rogers hoops prior.

Batter head is OEM and is a Rogers logo REMO Weatherking D-1, which were the heads fitted to the Rogers Dynasonic snare drums.

This drum is truly, pretty much ALL Rogers and very little Yamaha. I suspect this model was too expensive for them to produce as it utilizes so many Rogers parts .. so .. later production models got the Joe Thompson designed DUPLEX lugs, the slightly different strainer, and no "R" embossed into the hoops. I also have a 2nd model with the DUPLEX lugs so it was easy to compare the two.

Sound: As I have maintained, if you find either one of these EARLY models .. BUY IT! .. because they play/sound excellent, they truly do. I affectionately named this drum the Rogers SuperEight, because that's what it is! 8 lug COS shell, Beavertails/DUPLEX lugs, Rogers parts, and all in a very responsive and articulate drum that functions at many different tunings. The best part? They're always priced CHEAP!!! Everybody thinks they are a POS because of the Yamaha connection, but these EARLY models, the ones WITHOUT the lines running around the shell, are KILLER steel shelled snare drums! Hope you ENJOYED!

Tommyp! Excellent post! Glad you started a new thread for the R-360. I stumbled on to my R-360 shell and thought I'd give it a try. Turned out to be a great sounding snare drum!

THANKS Mark!, and...

... you are IN the R360 club! These are top quality snare drums through and through, and really get short shrift from the drumming community... but they shouldn't! Have you ever seen one in the build I showed? Those are difficult to find as they are literally the 1st production model. There are no serials ... date stamps ... etc. on/in the shells, so I don't know that there is a way to track production numbers on these first models. Interestingly, I bought the 2nd model first, the one with the DUPLEX lugs, etc... and it was that drum that blew me away. Whenever I saw THIS ONE, I couldn't believe it. Couldn't get my hand in my pocket for some cash and lint quick enough! I found this drum at a drum show. No one really paid any attention to it, as again... a Rogers R360 ... cheap, import, Yamaha, etc. Well, not really! Glad you liked Mark!

Tommyp!

I was never aware of the very first edition R-360 snare drum. Just figured they all came with the Duplex lugs and Bantam strainer. You have a knack for obtaining "first edition" drums!

As for my R-360, I'm planning on selling it. The thrill was putting it together and finding out how good it sounds! Now, it just sits in a drum bag in the closet. That's no life for a snare drum!

Indeed!... and so true Mark. I have only gigged the R360 once, just to see/hear it in the "gig zone" ... and it was excellent. Truly! But yeah, I have my MAIN snares that I play most always, so both these R360's don't get played outside of in the practice room every now and again when the mood strikes. They have their spot on the drum rack/frame, but so many drums... so little time ...! Hopefully after reading some of this, one of our members will grab that from you!

I have a first generation Rogers R-360 16x16 floor tom. It's well built and the lugs and wrap look nice. I've used it at a few gigs and was very pleased with the sound.

Hi JR!

Most people are not aware of the quality of the Yamaha/Rogers drums. The shells were all birch (maybe birch/mahogany?), with excellent edges. The Duplex lugs looked great on them!

Thanks for posting your drum!

Ya... that's a nice looking drum!, and... the WMP looks like a perfect match to all my Rogers WMP! The EARLY R360's are real nice... sleepers actually. I wouldn't hesitate to grab a set of those if a nicely cared for one came along, and of course in WMP! Grabbed this pic after sound check this past Saturday... low stage light per usual!, but look at the match between the WMP and your R360! This was a straight out DANCE gig, not the Sinatra Show, so I only brought the one floor tom...

Truly excellent drums. Fantastic deals to be had on these since mostly they sell in virtually unused perfect condition for about 50-60 dollars. Probably about time I get a couple, now that the word is out.

They do match well, here it is with the kit. I really love Rogers, I'm not sure what they did to those 20" kick drums, but holy moly, they sound like thunder.
