1970 Ludwig Kit Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Loading...

I set my sticks down almost 20 years ago. I had been toying with the idea of getting a "starter" kit again for the last couple of months. Well, as things go, a neighbor was having a yard sale and there was an old drum kit in the garage...

I bought it.

Its got a Ludwig 24" Bass, a 13" Bass mounted Tom, a blank mount, and an 18" floor Tom with no legs. The snare that came with it is a Rogers Powertone 14", Made in Cleveland.

There were a few misc. stands and some old sticks that came with it.

The Bass Drum has a Serial Number on it of 85290X the X replaces the last Digit. According to Database here, that makes it a 71 but, it is marked Sep 19 1970

So, my main question is what finish is the Main kit, the Bass and toms.

I think it started out as white marine pearl, but, time has taken it's toll...

here are some pics.

Thanks!!

In the catalogs they should have added a "feature" of the finish that they change to Yellow Marine Pearl! DOH

I don't know what the other bass drum mounted tom size would be.

Any ideas on how to tell what kit it is/was?

Thanks!

The double tom mount has been added. Looks like the kit originally had just the one rack tom. Nice find! The Rogers snare is a desirable item. Floor tom legs are easily fixed.

Should I play this kit? Am I going to destroy it?

It had some pretty beat up Sam Ash heads on the tom and snare and a murdered remo on the bass.

Went to the local shop and got some Evans Hydraulics for the Toms, an Evans batter for the bass, and an Evans snare pak.

The bass, snare and bass mounted tom sound great. haven't even hit the floor tom as I want to get the legs.

It has a Pearl hi-hat stand and Pearl Bass Pedal, and Zildjian K hi-hats...

I do not know what type of ride it came with, but, it's got a crack in it. still sounds ok though!

Thanks!

I'm kinda worried I'm going to "destroy" them by putting the "wrong" heads or something else on them.

The resonator ring on the bass is missing all the claws and tuners. but, I think I can find them on eBay...

now, I gotta find a crash cymbal and stand...

It would be nice to get all Ludwig stands, etc.

And all that stuff for the smoking retail price of............. (I hate you garage- sale-deal finders.) Never been so lucky and yours was right next door, to boot!

on closer inspection of the kit, the double tom mount, as Norman931 stated, was added later, it's a Ludwig piece with a black and white circle logo, the other tom mount plates are still there. no mounts just the plates.

so, in the 80's I'm guessing someone drilled a hole in the top of the bass and ut that double tom mount on there. so, where is the other tom? LoLoLoLo

Should I just buy some of the $15.00 Gibraltar legs online or is it worth it to seek out actual Ludwig pieces? Probably get the Gibraltar pieces for now, and if I find some Ludwig legs later pick those, up.

And, yeah, I got it pretty cheap, but, by the time I get all the hardware sorted, get the kit all cleaned up, finish with the heads and cymbals and stands, I'll have just as much invested in it as if I would have just bought them on eBay anyway! LoLoLoLo

But, this kit has got the bug back in me, so that's a good thing.

Oh, there is a what I consider "rough" WFL snare stand that came with it... the other stands that came with it appear to be generics... I'll post detailed pics up tomorrow probably...

Thanks for the input folks!
