1970's 6" and 8" Concert Toms Last viewed: 18 seconds ago

Hi Folks,

I just purchased 6" and 8" blue sparkle concert toms w/stand on ebay.

Maybe a few of you saw them, maybe not. They were staged well for the camera. The badges looked flat, the interior looked to be granitone and I assumed the rims were original. The auction listed as "authentic". I had asked about extra holes and was told they were very clean drums. I did notice that the mount screws were not original but upon receiving the toms the badges were bent and glued down, the rims don't seem to be Ludwig but what really has me questioning these is the interior. An almost flat grey. Not granitone which is what I perceived it to be in the auction. Any input is helpful.

I guess what I am asking is…has anyone seen this interior on a Ludwig tom? Does it seem to be original?

I`ve seen it before Bondo, Here`s a 70`s original octoplus. That interior looks factory to me. Flat interior.

all good not only is granitone correct there a [part of a octaplus kit those 2 toms are the hardest to find

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Thanks for the responses. I knew of their scarcity so I purchased these to accent my big beat blue sparkle set but the interior grey is not like the granitone in my zillion other kits. It is a darker flat pure grey. Not a lighter speckled finish.

Were there different shades of the interior paint?

My 1974 6" and 8" concert toms have the lighter speckled granitone, and the granitone completely covers the wood and bearing bottom edge. You don't see the maple like you can on the bottom of yours. Not saying yours are not original but I have never seen that. Oddball's kit seems to be the same as yours though.

Yes, all my Standards and some other Luddys have the granitone all the way to the bearing edge. It is weird. Aside from the rings the vertical grain under the shell finish looks like mahogany.

vibes has a good point. Maybe there were the metal rings on the bottom at one time ? Make sense ?

Make sure there is a bearing edge! I scored some 70's Slingy toms and the 6 inch tom had NO bearing edge cut! Funniest thing is that after a pro had cut a new matching edge, there was no difference in sound.??? I give up...

I don`t think cutting an edge on a c-Tom will change anything at all. My SONOR kit don`t have edges on the C-Toms, unless I put a head on there, nothing will change if I cut them.
