1971 Ludwig drums - ballpark value? Last viewed: 24 minutes ago

Hello All,

I have a 1971 Ludwig kit that I am thinking of selling. You guys seemed to be the right folks to take a look and give me a rough ballpark of what to expect. It is black diamond, I think 3 ply, and has a 20" kick, 16" floor tom, 12" and 13" rack toms. No snare unfortunately. The kick drum used to have a badge on the inside that said May 8, 1971, but has since been worn off and lost. All other drums have badges, the floor tom has a machine-numbered serial (838218), while the rack toms have a hand-scribed serial, the same number on both (032 40 4087). They have the original hardware (lugs, rims, hoops, tom mount). I love the drums, still gig with them from time to time, but just came into a DW kit and have run out of room for both. I've taken some pics, and have a bunch more of each drum, the edges, and the original tom mount. As you can see, the outer kick drum hoop is pretty beat up, but still is in the round and holds the resonant head in place. Any help with would be really appreciated! Thanks drum gurus.

They look pretty nice. Too bad the hand-made serial numbers are on the badges. I would say that the price could range from 700-1000 on a good day. Are any of the screws stripped? Any of the mounting racket holes badly distorted? Any glue seams lifting on those drums? That era was notorious for seam-lift because of the glue they used then. Do you have any of the old stands?Burger Kin

Thanks for your comments. I may have 1 or 2 of the original cymbal stands somewhere in storage, I will check. All the screws are in good shape, but the kick drum does have a couple of additional drill holes from a mount that I removed when I bought the kit. I will attach a close up picture of it. The seams all seem, pardon the pun, to be intact, I will inspect closer and take a picture if necessary. What is the difference between hand written serials and machine scribed ones? Thanks again. Oh, and I have the original leather-like soft cases, as pictured, and the hard cases for toms and floor tom. Not sure if that would help with value or not.

Nice looking set. Too bad about the bass drum and those extra holes! It is always disturbing to see someone put an extra mount on like that. Oh well, hindsight is always 20/20. That will devalue the set a bit.
