1976 Ludwig Big Beat Outfit in Butcher Block Cortex Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Well ... I went and did it. I brought a Ludwig kit back under my roof. I have always wanted a Butcher Block kit ever since I first saw one YEARS and YEARS ago. I'm in the clear minority in that I think these are pretty cool.

These are 3 ply maple/poplar/maple with the clear inners. Absolutely beautiful shell layups with excellent edges. There is one tiny nick (size of an ant) on the 12 right at the midsection. There is a small chip (1/8 inch long) on the 16 just about under the hoop. That's the only issues with the kit. The chrome is unreal.

I tested out a plethora of heads and settled on combinations of some clear and coated Remo and coated Aquarian. They have a deep and very round whoompf sound.

Anyway, I'm enjoying the heck out of it.

Looking great.

How much did you pay for them?

And a side note, is that an OCDP stool? If so, I have the same one. Damn comfortable.

I'm not normally too cool on the butcher block finish but that one is sweet! Very subtle changes in the wood finish.

Believe it or else!

I like Butcher Block, but it's not a must-have for me. But if I found one this nice, I'd have to consider a purchase.

I've said many times before. Ludwig butcher block will be one of the hot

wraps and in demand in the future. These are a sleeper in drums.

Very cool looking. I agree that these drum will only go up in value.

Your second picture looks like the Ludy and the Slingy are about to battle it out. ;)

Right on! My main kit is ludwig butcher block ( bought in 1978). I always thought it was beautiful. It's good to see others liking the finish. I think I saw someone here selling original bb sheets, if you want to rewrap a snare.
