1979 Slingerland no badge question Last viewed: 8 minutes ago

I have an opportunity to purchase a four piece matching 1979 Slingerland drum set (3 ply with re rings) for $300. The problem is that none of the drums have their badges. It does not appear to be a re-wrap (see pic below). The sizes are 22, 13, 14, and 16. How much does the lack of badges effect the price. They appear to be in decent shape.

Thanks,

Probably a couple of hundred would be my guess.. But I'd say that is already taken in to account with this kit. 300 is a real good price from what I see on that kit, particularly if you are going to keep them. I see similar size and of that vintage (with badges) going for 500-1000.

Cheers

John

The bottom rims on the mounted toms are not slingerland they are triple flange ludwig type, check the bearing edges on those toms for any possible damage, but this is a good price.

The missing inlays and replacement grommets indicate rewrap to me.

Nice looking kit, are those bass drum t-rods correct? I thought those bullet type were from the 60's. They are cool, wouldn't bother me if they were incorrect.

Thank you!

Gotcha. But, why in the world would someone re-wrap a drum set in black?

Hope you bought these beauties. Slingerland is by far the best value on the vintage market. A professional sounding kit right up there with Ludwig. Nice big round sound. Update us...

Is there something wrong with black compared with other colors? If done well, I think that it looks great. I don't like silver sparkle. Yet, it's one of the most popular rewrap colors. I like stripped, sanded, and clear-coated drums even less than silver sparkle. Yet, many people think that this looks good. We all have our likes and dislikes.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Touche. I am approaching this from a re-sale stand point. Show me a 1975 Ludwig four piece in oyster blue pearl and show me a 1975 Ludwig four piece in white cortex and I will show you one that will sell for $1100 and one that will sell (finally after being lowered five times) for $600. Same would apply to black cortex. This really does bring up a great point though. The 70's and 80's saw the solid color wraps become prevalent. You would think that as you age, you pine for what you had when you were first starting out on drums. My first kit was a solid black Tama Swingstar. I do not pine for black at all.

I decided to pass on it because of lack of badges and the fact that it very well could be a re-wrap. Here is the phone number if anyone is interested. It is at a guitar center.
