1980 Ludwig Floor Tom has extension? Last viewed: 7 hours ago

Loading...

Hey guys - I'm back with another question.

I recently picked up a 1980 Ludwig kit. I know in 1980 they stopped putting the internal muffler in the drums. At least on classics like the one I have.

However, this kit has been modified slightly. The last owner took off the standard metal washers on the tension rods and replaced them with nylon. That one I know.

The one I am not sure about is the extension under the leg mounts. I am calling it an extension, because I am not sure what it is called. Some might call it a gromet, but it is shaped like the back side of the leg mount, made of rubber and aproximately 1/2" thick. It makes the mount stand away from the shell and allows the leg to pass the rim. I am assuming this was done to avoid scratching the side of the rim.

My question here is was this a standard part on a 1980 kit? Or did the owner add this? - My bet is it was added, but I wanted to ask the experts. :)

Regards,

Randy

It's just a hard rubber gasket, that was standard equippment for awhile in the late 90's early 2000's if memory serves me

They started using the spacers when they started putting the larger wingnut on the mount. The one with their logo matching the wing screws on all of the hardware. Part of it was clearance of the legs over the rim and the other was clearance of the wingnut over the shell. The handles are just a bit too long to clear the shell.... they are a simple fix and addition, I've added them to my floors...

Not sure if that would be factory on a 1980 set. It would be of benefit, though probably. What finish is that? Is that a lacquer or a wrap?

I had a 4 ply 16" FT and it was an early Monroe built with those gasket/spacers. Kept the legs from touching the hoops and vibrating terribly.

Never seen that on a 1980 drum. And, I don't recognize that color. Was that a lacquer drum or a wrap, and what does the badge look like? I'm not disputing your assertion it was a 1980 drum, just would like a bit more info than just the ft mount and the side of the drum. Thanks!

The drum is from the 80s. I didn't nail it down to a particular year but the badge is a B/O with rounded edges and it has no internal mufflers.

The wrap is kind of a orangeish color, but if you look at the 1979 catalog finishes, they called it "Yellow cortex" it was really more of an orange. It appears they only used it in 1979 and 1980 (which is why I kind of guessed it was a 1980 kit) But I don't think they made too many of them. By the time you get to the 1981 finishes, it's already gone.
