Great drums. I've got the big brother of yours ('80 model, same finish, 24/12/13/14/16) although mine looks like he's been through a few bar fights compared to yours...

Having similar thoughts with mine; love 'em but they're not really getting much if any playing time since I got the Radio Kings. It's nice to have to have the contrast between the two sounds, aside from both being on the larger size they're almost opposite ends of the spectrum, but I kind of feel bad for just having them sit around taking up space in the living room. Might put them out there and let them go if I'm offered the right (or at least a half decent) price. And remember, Elvin played Superstars so you know they're good!

Ahh, EJ and the ever so elusive 14x18 Tama Superstar bop kick drum!

I think I've seen 1 lifetime on Ebay...

Found it!!

Early Superstars do not command the value that I think they should have. They are great sounding drums with good hardware and the wood finishes are awesome. I scored a set of 1979 Superstars 14x24, 8x12, 9x13 and 16x16 for only $500. They were in the natural maple finish and they were in almost perfect shape. I played them for a year or two and decided to sell them when another kit came along that I just had to have. I avoided ebay because of the shipping and ultimately only got $600 for them on local Craigslist. I did not even get a call until I lowered them to $650. I know this sounds harsh, but it is reality unfortunately. The tobacco sunburst finish might garner $1000-$1200, but you are probably looking at $5-700 max. If you had the matching snare, you could add $200-300 more.

Thanks for the perspective. I'm inclined to sit on them for awhile (at least until my wife starts complaining about them taking up room in one of our closets). ;). Does make me kinda sad with them sitting in a closet covered with a sheet. But on the other hand, I'm having so much fun with my new Starclassic Maples that I really haven't spent much time thinking about it! :)

I know this doesn't fit under the topic of "vintage drums" but I thought you folks might enjoy seeing the drums that replaced my 1980 Tama Superstars... (and, yes, I decided to keep the Superstars for now)

These are my new Starclassic Maples:

Thanks! Yeah, I think Kenny Aronoff plays Starclassic Maples. And as nice as they look, they sound even better! I'm having a blast playing them! D' Drummer
