20 Years Since Billy Cobham Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Billy Cobham has been my drummer hero since 1980, the day a friend of mine handed me a copy of the latest Tama catalog featuring Billy on the front with his triple bass drum setup. I saw Billy 3 times before all back in the late 80's into the early 90's. He released two albums back to back with the same lineup, Warning in 1985 and Power Play in 1986. Both those albums are still my favorites from him.

It had been 20 plus years since the last time I saw Billy Cobham so I really didn't know what to expect. Reading up on his current lineup I knew long time Cobham guitarist Dean Brown was back in the band as well as Gary Husband (drummer for Level 42) on keyboards. He is also calling the tour Spectrum 40 as it's been 40 years since it's release and will be playing most of the songs from the landmark album. I also read that Billy turned 69 back in May which just blew my mind.

The band came out on stage and Billy Cobham sat himself behind his massive green sparkle Yamaha kit. For 4 songs straight he pulled out all the stops and tore thru a blistering workout behind the kit. I was in shock, the second song he played was Radioactive off of Power Play, probably my favorite Cobham song ever. Then right into a modern version of Stratus, very similar to the version he did on the Warning album. After the fourth song he finally came out front and introduced the band and said a few words before going back behind the kit for more fireworks! The one thing that really hit home was when my wife leaned over at one point and asked me "Does Billy Cobham have 10 arms?". And that's just it, even to my ears he sounds like that! Needless to say at age 69 Billy Cobham shows no signs of ever slowing down.

Billy Cobham is an inspiration to me and should be to any drummer.

He was a pioneer early on with some new ideas for the drum set.

I wish I could get my pic with him.

Awesome!!

Even if the only thing he ever did was "A Tribute to Jack Johnson" he'd still be one of the greatest ever.

It must've been a great show.

Excellent on the photo! Congratulations!

I was first introduced to Mr. Cobham's genius when he was with the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Afterward, I was pleased to find he'd played on some of my favorite jazz albums.

Again, CONGRATS!

Some of my favorite Billy drumming was when him & the Grateful Dead guitarist put together Bobby & the Midnight's. His drumming is more laid back than usual on the album but still nice to listen to.

I first heard of Billy Cobham when my dad brought home a copy of Solar Eclipse. He was having dinner at a restaurant on his way home from a business trip and somehow the conversation turned to the fact that his waiter was a drummer. He told my dad that I should listen to Billy Cobham. Understand that my father, while being a brilliant man, knows nothing about music and is more or less tone deaf. He apparently stopped by a record store (remember those?) and came home to tell me his story. I put the record on our big console stereo (remember those?) and was completely transfixed.

I got to see him at a clinic in 1980 and was absolutely blown away. My son listens to progressive rock and is constantly playing what I call the "Cobham" fill which is a bar sixteenth notes with every third sixteenth note replaced by a pair of 32nd notes until you get to the last four. I pull out some BC tracks and play them for him. I tell him that he should say thanks because a Billy blazed the trail that his heroes are now walking.

Out of curiosity, what size venue did he play and about how many people showed up?

Brilliant photos by the way. I wish he were coming closer to Nashville.
