Hmm... I've always been intriqued by those 12" deep bass drums. Please don't put any more ideas in my head! LoLoLoLo

Okay, a friend of mine, (not a player, but a trader) has an old Ludwig 20x12, and I had never seen one before. It looked odd to me, and I was thinking that perhaps it had been a converted marching band drum or something. Now I'm thinking - did Ludwig actually make this size for kits, and what would be the intent? Come to think of it, I don't think I've actually seen an 18" Ludwig kick for that matter, (in the flesh anyway) on Ebay sure. So... what's up wit dat?

A catalog kit with 20x12 (single tension) with "economy" being the order of the day. From the 1962 catalog:

Zenstat: Ya beat me to it! Yeah, those 20 X 12's are great! I don't have one any longer, but the one I had surprised me with the range it had.

I have an 18 and a few 20 X 14 BD's. I like the little one for practice. I have gigged with it, but I prefer the 20". Whoever it was that said it is on the mark. The 20's are far easier to tune, and seem to have a better range.

I pieced together a Hobby kit and the bass drum was amazing. The 3x13 was ok, but that bass drum was special.

I like the 18"'s for live playing of jazz the ringing sound you get from them is the best for me.But i have also used 12x20 and 14x20 bass drums live playing they also sound great.I like the 12x20 better than the 14x20...When it comes to jazz music.On a side note playing R&R for years live playing i have always used 22's.24's,26's,28's but when it comes down to studio work i always go for the 14x20 drums sometimes 12x20....Mikey
