3-Ply Ludwig Bass Drum Question Last viewed: 7 hours ago

This is likely a simple one, so bear with me.

Should 3-ply Ludwig bass drums have reinforcement rings?

I know eBay isn't the place to learn something new, but while looking at a few listings I've seen drums without reinforcement rings being described as early '70s Ludwigs. These ads are likely put up by people who are uninformed or possibly trying to get on over on an unsuspecting buyer, but I'm just curious if there was any point in time where 3-ply bass sizes weren't getting rings.

Thanks. I just couldn't shake the feeling this might be one of those modifications Ludwig made that only lasted a brief time. Better to consult the experts than wing it!

Ludwig had some 4 ply drums that had no rings. All of the 3 ply had them though. They moved from 3 ply to no ring 6 ply drums in the mid-late 70's.

The 4-ply drums were smaller tom sizes, right? I think that's what I've heard in the past.

As I understand it, Ludwig marketed the "super classic" 4 ply shell in the mid 80's after they moved to North Carolina. Trying to offer a thin shell like in the old days. 4ply shells were also used in Rocker 2 drums but they were wrapped and had granitone coating inside to hide bad wood grain.

I have a set of rockers from 88 and they are 4 ply with clear interiors. Also sound amazing.
