$359 Ludwig Venus vs $50 off brand snare Last viewed: 19 hours ago

As I've noted here on this forum ,I bought a Carl Palmer Venus snare drum that simply cannot be tuned in terms of snare release.

Compare it to a $50 buck used GC steel snare that I bought a while back.

Ludwig should hang their heads in shame over this.

Did you buy it off the internet without playing it first? It could be a minor detail with the throwoff.

I did ,but I've bought many snares in my lifetime and I've never had an issue like this.

Here's a review on Amazon with somebody with the same issue.

He ended up returning his.

I'm just about ready to return mine, but made a video to warn folks about this drum.

The drilling for the strainer is out of tolerance. If you look at this pic, you can easily see that the drilling for the strainer is off to the left, and look down the wires to see how far off the other side is too. This out of allignment wont cause your problem but I`ll bet your house that the drilling on yours is too high.

That snaregate is junk being that slim.

Looks like an expensive shell got drilled by the new guy and Ludwig didn`t eat the costs, the let them out, what comes back, comes back, what gets sold elswhere, is good for Ludwig.

Just my opinion here.

It also looks to me that if you shift the bottom hoop over to the top lugs, they will line up center. Almost like the lugs are in the wrong hole and one should be the other.

If you take off all the lugs and put the bottom lug where the top is and the top where the bottom lugs are, it`ll be centered.

Maybe the drill machine is correct and the assembly is not correct.

Just very irritating that a company that has such a highly thought of rep could not get it right on a relatively expensive snare drum.

Didn't they even bother to prototype before going into production?

Exactly.... If the tension screws are long enough that's how I'd get around it.... But very poor design from Ludwig...

Cheers

It also looks like the throw has plenty of travel. Seems like the cutout in the bottom hoop is too shallow and or too close to the edge. Like it's not letting the snares drop down far enough. Oddball and John are right on the lugs. Someone was asleep at the wheel on this one. A real shame it's a very nice looking drum! Green plating is kinda cool looking and goes nice with the brass hardware.

Glenn.

Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.
