50's WFL Kit Last viewed: 5 hours ago

Just thought I'd post this up because I'm pretty psyched about it...

Recently pieced together a 1950's WFL kit through a couple ebay auctions.

9x13 WFL Black Cortex stamped May 13 1957

14x22 WFL Black Cortex stamped May 17 1957

right now paired with:

16x16 Ludwig (transition badge) Black Lacquer floor tom stamped June 24 1959

Nickel hardware all around. NOB rims. And the floor tom has WFL leg brackets, so its an ok match although a younger, lacquered, orphaned cousin.

All same 3 ply mahogany interior shells. Look beautiful and untouched inside.

Wrap on the bass and tom is original, as is the lacquer. I haven't seen much black cortex WFL out there -- anyone else have a 50's WFL kit in this wrap?

Obviously these need some clean up, some pieces to finish out the L arm, hoop inlays are all there but need to be re-glued, new heads...

I'm trying to decide on a reso-head for the bass. In the meantime that 70's logo sticker had to go (Goo-Gone -- which was also great at removing some splattered latex paint on the floor tom).

This forum has really given me a great appreciation and phenomenal insight on vintage drums, so I just thought I'd share what I've got.

I'll get some more, better photos up once these get in a little better shape...or if anyone wants to see something specific let me know.

Carter

@DownTownFarmer: I agree with you about the solid black thing. Not usually my thing. But the nickel combined with the aging of the wrap/paint set these apart for me -- nothing too shiny. Lemme get back to you about the calf head...

That's a great kit. I collect black wrap drums. I have a matching snare for you if you'd like. They're rather a rather rare wrap.

Those Trixon's are cool.

If anyone else is in the market for a 50's WFL players kit in the NY/NJ area, this popped up the other day (not my ad):

At the Chicago Drum Show I iocked up a 3 piece trans badge black set. The bass drum's a 12x22, 13 and 16 toms. Floor tom leg mounts were replaced in the mid 60's, and the drums were pretty beat up. But the chrome parts polished up nice and when I put the set back together and tuned 'em up they sounded great. Mauro Magellan (ex Georgia Satellites) was over last week and took them home! The black wrap makes for a beautiful set I think.

Man I love that kit. It looks dangerous as hell. That things a parents worst nightmare. Hope you plan to play some psychobilly, and race with the devil! Damn!

Thanks everyone!

Pulled off the bass claws and t-rods and put them in for the old Dawn and water soak. Started scrubbing them a little and realized what looked like a layer of grime is actually a thin clear-coat someone applied to the claws (and lugs) over the nickel.

The lugs are actually really clean, and I'd rather not remove them at the moment. Maybe I can get that thin coat off the lugs with just a little acetone...unless anyone has other suggestions.
