59' Ludwig kit, rare size, rare finish, home again! Last viewed: 1 hour ago

My trans badge kit is back home again! Yee-ha! The chance to buy back a kit you've sold, and that you regret selling, is few and far in-between, but I've been given a second chance with this one.

1959 Ludwig: 18"x20" bass drum, 12"x8" rack tom, 16"x16" floor tom.

They are no worse for the wear, and I'm psyched to set them up and play them again. Vintage/aged 3-ply mahogany... doesn't get much better than that.

Jim - When I first got these a few years ago, I was a member of another drum forum and we discussed this kit extensively. Willian F. Ludwig III joined the discussion and although he could not recall the specific kit, he was certain it was a custom order, or presentation kit for an endorsee. When I bought them, I thought they were wrapped in a faded burgundy sparkle, but it turns out to be a one-off for Ludwig because this color wrap was never offered in catalogs, or on any other set of Ludwig drums. The wrap is factory original, tucked into the scarf joints of the shells. The wrap was added before the shells were rolled! So, no re-wrap. They are also well-aged 3-ply mahogany shells. Warm, FAT, round sound. I'm real glad to have them back.

Mike - Thank you , yes, I'll take your advice. I'm just in shock that they found their way back to me... 'Homing-drums!' lol

I don't know enough about the offered colors to dispute the wrap, but such a deep bass drum on such an early kit... Really an interesting kit there.

I have to imagine you have not found another drum like these sizes even in a standard finish right?

According to Wm. III, the shells were used mostly to make floor toms, I have seen some other bass drums from that era, in that size, with four feet/spurs as well. Last one I saw was a transition kit in WMP with one of these, 18"x20"s for a kick. It's a cannon. Deep, heavy THUMP! Projects well for 3-ply mahogany. I imagine the depth has something to do with it.

The photo was taken just before I added the Maxwell rail mount to the bass drum. The original rail mount was missing when I got the kit. The Maxwell was an excellent replacement. You can see the four-spur set-up on the drum.

I have a transition badge Super Classic snare drum that matches that wrap. I don't know how to post pics but can send one to an email address if your interested. The interior is white. What color are yours. Awesome kit by the way.

I wont ask how much you bought them back for, but how much did you sell them for long ago? Sounds like a pretty rare kit

So glad you got them back!!!
