'60s Gretsch Name Band/4157 snares…That hit or miss? Last viewed: 19 hours ago

So I've been looking for one of these for awhile. I played one at a drum shop that sounded amazing, but it was too expensive. Also played another drummer's on a gig that sounded great. The 4160 I had, though COB, was also a great snare. But I keep reading/hearing they're extremely unpredictable because of snare beds and hardware. The micro repro should fix the latter issue, but are the snare beds really that inconsistent? I see the word "boxy" everywhere…does that just mean it doesn't sound as crisp as a Dynasonic (not what I'm looking for anyway - more a dry rimshot crack and some bark) or is it really like the wires aren't even engaged?

I ask because if I'm gonna spend $350 and up for a snare without playing it, I want to know how likely I am to get a snare that can't be saved. Thanks!

You need to ask the seller if he would be willing to provide you with a detailed set of photos showing all aspects of the drum including snare beds. It's so hard buying drums sight unseen (other than the often times blurry photos people provide,) and you'd need a psychic, or someone on-site who can put eyes and hands on the drum for you to know for sure. Good luck, I hope it turns out to be a good one for you. I know the anxiety of buying online.

Too many great drums to list here!
