60's Vintage Kit on a budget Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Loading...

I'm looking to buy a 60's kit, ideally Ludwig, Rogers, or Slingerland. Looking for a 24" bass drum (but won't argue with a 22"), 12"/13" rack tom, and 14/16" floor tom. Just looking for the those 3 drums.

I'm ideally looking for a pearl or oyster wrap, but I won't be too picky. If it needs some work, I'm happy to do it. I'm picking this set for a church and they have a tight-ish budget of $700.

Would this church be happy with an 80's Pearl or some other non-US manufacturer? Must it be vintage 60s? Seems odd that they would have such a narrow specific kit in mind. Many 1980s/90s decent drum sets can be had for $300 or less on your local craigslist. :)

I have a 1965 13X9 Ludwig in white marine pearl. It is in good shape, but doesn't include bottom hoop or tension rods. I will sell it for $200. You can compare that to http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ludwig-60s-Vintage-9x13-Tom-Drum-Original-White-Marine-Pearl-Nice-No-Extra-Holes-/200858652478?pt=Vintgae_Drums_Percussion&hash=item2ec41bcf3e

Please let me know whether or not you are interested.

Thanks!

We need to know where you are. Yeah - possible to ship to you, but alot more affordable and easier if you buy locally. Tell us where you are and we can help you search there, and perhaps a forum member near you has what you are looking for.

BTW - yeah - interested in why the church wants a vintage kit particularly. Modern classy kits can be affordable - in fact probably more affordable.

Thanks,

John

most churches that i see on tv with drums in the back ground are wicked sonors , pearl ref stuff like that , A church and i mean a church with a weak budget would not want a vintage kit that may cost them more for what they are ready for . If your buying for your church i will sell you a nice used mapex mars kit with brand new 6pc hardware pack in the box with brand new cymbals in the box for $700 Jesus will love you because you saved him money .

Thanks drums2xs.

Another example of some decent nice looking drums for a very reasonable amount of money:

For some reason, I have seen several of these kits priced real low (as in 100-200). See the red one that billnvick posted in this thread

http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=30708&highlight=verve

That is a 9 ply map/moh/map kit with good quality hardware. I know because I have one. That's the kind of thing I am thinking, not to mention the PDPs with really cool wraps (some nice pearls - you know which one I am thinking of-that light blue pearl one).

On the other hand, perhaps this is a really cool hip church that aims to be very contemporary and thus wants a 'vintage' kit with cool wrap. Throw us some insight.

Food for thought - the 'vintage' look, to many (common) people, means a drum that is a cool color with smaller low-mass lugs. Most don't know lug designs like we do. With that in mind, some modern affordable kits have these smaller classic looking lugs, but this also calls for a stencil MIJ. With tuning know-how - nobody (except perhaps most drummers and some non-drumming musicians) will be able to tell the difference - especially if they are micing. Mic up my old Dixie and it sounds very "vintage" and as cool as it looks - nice warm tone. Micing - this is one reason I have not treated the interiors of my MIJs. Shells with less projection don't matter when drums are mic-ed.

But we won't go off on that tangent.

-Lots of ideas and lots of options - and $700 is not that tight - very doable. That would be a downright pleasure - and I am sure you will enjoy taking care of that for the church.

Hi I have a great kit.

Amazing 1968 “PEARL” brand DRUM SET

The first professional Drum Set Pearl ever made!

the famous "PRESIDENT SERIES"

in a stunning ORIGINAL PSYCHADELIC WRAP

it was called Blue Oyster and still looks like new.

Looks more dramtic in person because it is more 3d and the pattern has much more depth than the photos show.

In the photos they look more flat similar to Ludwigs "Bowling Ball Oysters" but in person t hey look nothing like them!

In person the pattern has a deep layered look...Lots of depth and more color variations than the photos show..

Truly gorgeous and much nice looking than the Ludwigs and 100 times rarer...

You may never see another set like this. In 40 years I have only seen 2 other similar sets just like this one and they had the smaller 20" bass drum with the 12,13,16

This has a 22" bass drum!

A set like this is extremely rare

Totally unfaded.

The whole set looks like it just came out of a time capsule!

Look at the cool and very unique "diamond facet" lugs...they were only on this series of Pearl drums for 1-2 years in the 1960's!

Wood shells, not Fiberglass.

12" tom, 13" tom, 16" floor tom, 22" bass drum, 5x14 heavy chrome snare drum.

You can have one tom on the bass drum or two.

The original tom holders are there and they are just like the Rogers Swivomatics of the 1960's allowing you to position the drums any way you want on the bass drum.

more photos available.

Re: "the 1968 Amazing Pearl"

Considering you need stands and cymbals within that 700, this kit may be on the top end of your range for the shell kit......but I could not agree more that THIS KIT is exactly what you should snag up for the church. Talk about gorgeous!!!! I only wish I could snag that up for myself!!! You could go a route that would cost you a hair less, but if you were to go a hair over budget (you do need decent cymbals) then this would be a worthy reason to.

BTW - that snare is AWESOME.

+1 on this idea BIG TIME!

Here is a close up of the wrap...In person it is even MORE 3 dimensional...the depth of the Pearl is more dramatic when you see it live!

Another option I am also selling another set of 1968 Pearl Presidents in 12,14,20 with matching snare 8X12, 14X14, 14X20 AND MATCHING WOOD SNARE DRUM

Very cool original Yellow/Gold Strata wrap

NOTE: The wraps across all drums match much better than the photos show BECAUSE this wrap changes as you move and as light hits it!!! Very vcool, depending on where you and the light are different sections of the Strata pop out...LIKE IT IS ALIVE! see the closeup of the rack tom for an example.

BOTH, MY 1968 PRESIDENT YELLOW/GOLD STRATA SET AND MY 1968 PRESIDENT BLUE OYSTER PEARL KITS DO NOT HAVE THE TYPICAL 1960'S MIJ LIGHT CRAPPY LUAN SHELLS...THESE SHELLS ARE QUITE HEAVY WITH DISTINCT BEARING EDGES
