Hey y'all! I have a question for the community, I am thinking about grabbing a 3 piece set of '65 Slingerlands, no snare. Seller is asking for $950, which seems to be in the ball park of other kits like it, I just can't discern if I should spend that kind of money for just the toms and kick. Any thoughts? The kit is in great shape and the seller refurbished it himself.

Hi!
This post should be in 'General questions' or 'Vintage drums' section, IMHO. Just so You know.
I think the price is little high. You say the seller has refurbished it - does it mean, for example, that it used to have a wrap and now it's lacquered? For some reason, Slingerlands, while being no worse, are cheaper than comparable american vintage drums. 950 for a possibly altered bass and toms seems bit too high to me.
Anyway, that's just what I picked up from discussions here. Let's hear what others think.

It sounds expensive for what it is. But we'd really need to see good pictures of the kit to give a honest answer. Besides the non original finish other parts/issues could have been changed/replaced/repaired which can lower the price in some cases. There's a lot of good kits out there for less money with more drums and a snare. I'd keep looking.
Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

"The seller refurbished it himself" could mean that a master craftsman has restored it, or
that someone, although well intentioned, fixed it with Krylon and steel wool.
I personally would pay $950 for one in original but good condition, but would want to know more about the refurbishment. Maybe it was just a polish and new heads!
Any extra holes drilled in the shells, or other sins that are commited on drums by previous owners?
Hi,
I agree with the others. $950 is a bit too expensive for a partial Slingerland kit that has had some restoration. If possible, ask the seller for some pictures of the drums and the work that was completed. I personally think $650-750 is about as high as I would pay for two toms and the bass. As seperate peices you can generally grab a mounted tom off eBay for $80-150, a floor tom for around $300, and a bass drum for $150-300 based on condition and size. Good luck!

Slingerland lover here to say that you have provided not nearly enough information for us to give you any advice other than generic advice:
1. refinishing or rewrapping destroys a lot of the value of the drums
2. changing out of original hardware for non-original hardware replacement loses value
3. no matching (not metal) snare negatively affects the value
4. extra holes translates to lower resale value
5. if "refurbishing" means just cleaning up a rare three piece drum set, the price might be a bargain. Otherwise, that kind of money seems at least two times as much as the average nice Slingerland three piece 65 drum set will fetch nowadays.
Right on! Thanks, y'all. By "refurbishing" I meant that he just cleaned it up but left it entirely intact. They never originally had a wrap and are in really great shape, no dings, all original hardware, etc. I've attached a couple pictures from his CL post. Your input has been really great, much appreciated.
Nice looking kit for sure, not sure if worth 950.00 even if all original,Slings bring a little less compared to other Vintage U.S.drums,950.00 would be top price I think.
950$ is way to much, I have sold three Slingy kits in the last couple years and man, wish I could have gotten $950. !!
Those are beautiful drums but I can promise you that your dollar will go much ****her, keep looking. That just from my experience, I have purchased nicer kits for about half the cost.
Thank you!
