'69ish Sound King w/ Dual Super Strainer - parts help please Last viewed: 1 minute ago

Loading...

I recently cleaned and rebuilt a 1969 Sound King snare with a Dual Super Strainer (part of a WTP kit that I am restoring).

Love the drum and it sounds pretty sweet-even with some jury rigged snare strands. Which leads me to this plea for help-

I am missing a few parts in order to properly complete the restoration

1. The "bushings" that set in the shell and support the control rod are missing.

2. The very long snare strands and whatever special attachment I need to connect them to the strainer(s).

Can I find these parts or should I try and find reproductions?? Does anybody have any suggestions?

I have reviewed the good info and photos of this drum at DrCJW's Slingerland site.

Thank you for any advice or guidance you can lend!

Whatever you do, take your time. I used to have one of those just like yours but mine worked. Then one day around 1986, it stopped working. There was no eBay back then. This is by far my favorite all-time snare drum I ever owned. So be patient. Get the parts you need. I hope you can restore it to it's original magnificence. I gave mine to my cousin after I encountered the problem with the paralell strainer. I've played Ludwig Super Sensitives that sounded awesome but never as good as that Sound King. I wish I never had given it away because now I know I could have probably fixed it. I remember it having the most unreal snare response. Crispy like a paper bag tearing at all volume levels and the most lovely rimshot crack you'll ever hear. Trust me, it's heavy brass so wear earplugs. Good luck and please send pictures when you finish it.

Hey!! Thank you for the solid advice and especially for the positive energy.

I have a backup snare to use until this one is restored properly. And it may take me a while, but no sweat, I have the rest of the set to restore - piece by mother-loving piece. I'll try and load some photos.

Right now I have some standard snares suspended with snare cords. But I know I am missing the real sound potential. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks again.
