70s Chrome Ludwig Standard snare vs Supra Last viewed: 5 hours ago

I've seen threads about this before, but would love to open this topic up again for discussion. I currently own a chrome plated aluminum Ludwig Standard drum from the early 70s with the 60s throw (P83?). The shell has the "Reliable Antigalvanic" stamp on the interior and has 8 lugs and no center bead. Other than the fewer lugs and lack of shell bead, is there much difference in the drum when compared to a Ludalloy Supraphonic? Are the issued hoops made of the same materials? Can anyone tell much difference in the sound of the two? I've used this drum in the studio and it sounded great (better than other snares that were much more expensive).

Thanks for your input!

I own one of those along with the Supras as well. The standard drum sounds more like an Acrolite to me as it is 8 lugs like the Acros. The lack of bead does appear to make some difference in sound as well. The Standards are great sounding snares. Just a different animal as compared to the Supra I think.

Same hoops as other Ludwigs of the era. I'd agree with Mike. It is the same aluminum shell but fewer lugs and the lack of a bead do make it somewhat different from the Supra. They left the bead off so they could use the same double lugs as they had for the wood shelled snares. BTW the wood Standard snare drums are essentially the same as a Jazzfest since the only real difference is the lug design.
