70's Gretsch ID - What is this kit? Last viewed: 8 hours ago

Hello all.

I've been stepping out of my norm a bit lately, and those of you who know me know that I'm a Luddy guy. Lately, I've been delving into Slingerland, but most recently I stumbled upon these. I know they are 70's Gretsch, but what model are they? The sizes are really strange at 12, 12, 16, 20. Any ideas? Also, is this an original finish? The badges and grommets don't look tampered with, but the floor tom is darker than the rest of the drums, so that makes me wonder a bit. I'm trying to figure out if these were unwrapped and stained. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Wow! Don't tell me I actually have you guys stumped. There must be at least one of us out here who's up on the Gretsch gear Coffee Break2

So, here's what I can add to this from what I've researched so far - they are the first generation stop sign badge, they have paper tags inside the shells, serial numbers are in the 39xxx range, I believe the shells are 6 ply? The one thing I can't seem to find is this particular tom mounting system identified to a particular model. Perhaps this is one of the budget or student models?

Gretsch gurus... Any ideas???

If you look at the 1977 catalog scans here it shows that type of tom mount on the Broadkaster II series page. Not the best pic but looks very much like what you have mount wise.

That's the Rock and Roll outfit. Comes with 2 12" toms, 20" bass and 16" floor. Its a catalog listed kit - offered from the late 60's to early 70's. I've got the same set but walnut finish. Mounting system is the monster mount ball and socket type.

Not familiar with the finish, but the Monster Double Tom mount with hex and ball is what I have on mid '70's kit.

Nice rig!

Thanks guys, that's awesome! I really appreciate the information. I'm still a bit concerned about the finish as I can't seem to find it listed in any of the catalogs and the floor tom is quite a bit darker than the rest of the drums. Any ideas on a ballpark value for these? I think I got a decent deal. This is my first Gretsch kit and I'm not looking to sell it, I'd just like to know for reference purposes.

Probably around $175.00. Do you accept cash? ;-)

Look at ebay completed sales.

Good luck with them.

I have a mid 70s kit with that mount also.... was told it was the gretsch design of a pearl type double tom mount.... mine stripped out back in the day so I used a radaitor clamp to hold em in place.....I watch ebay from time to time to replace mine but for over 20 yrs the clamp is doing the trick.

Thanks supraphonic! I've been trying to find the catalog listing for it. Would you happen to have this? I'd love to have a scan or PDF of it. As far as the finish goes, I can't find it anywhere.
