Recently picked up a set of mid-70s Gretsch drums, been swearing over the dual tom holder ever since (#4937)....what a piece of junk! What were they thinking?!

That is the "Achilles heel" of Gretsch from that era. That's why you see so many of them with different brand mounts on them. Many were ordered without any mounts installed and then had Rogers, Pearl, etc. mounting systems added. In that case those units are original to the drums and the only mounts they ever had, although from a collector's standpoint they don't seem to be as desirable today when they are like that.

The Techware hardware that Gretsch introduced around 1980 is decent stuff but prior to that they were way behind the curve on their drum hardware.

The tom mount on my 1984 Gretsch kit is the best I've ever seen.

I have just finished cleaning up a kit with this mount and i have to admit i haven't even tried it out as I play one up and the way i see it if I want to mount the tom on a snare stand and I still have the original mounting hardware on the tom then I'm left with an ugly hex shaft protruding from the drum. As a result I left out refitting the mount to the tom. Or is the hex shaft removable? It doesn't seem to be. The photo shows the tom without the central part of the mount (ball and hex shaft)
