70s Ludwig - Advice please? Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Loading...

Folks - I'm going to see a Ludwig kit this weekend. Stands and Zildjian cymbals included. I haven't owned a Ludwig kit since my very first drums - a spectacular six-piece blue Vistalite, purchased new in 1976??? Like an idiot, I sold the set a few years later, when I thought Vistalite was no longer cool.

Photos attached. Any advice on what to look for? Models of interest? This does not look particularly valuable to me, but I'm the guy who just bought a badgeless, MIJ Slingerland :). I'm guessing the cymbals are worth as much as the drums.

Thanks in advance!

Maybe not as valuable because of the plain white wrap but this kit will sound really great. Hope things work out.

I have a white wrap Slingerland kit from the same era and I love it. It's a neutral color that can be played out anywhere, weddings, etc., if you do such a thing. A color that wouldn't offend a priest.

Is the BD the only drum with a badge ? I don`t even see a vent hole on the toms but there`s one panel I can`t see on them. It should have the mount, not the badge.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Late 70's/early 80's Ludwigs so the badge (and muffler) is directly opposite of the panel with the mounting bracket (making them "Omni-directional" since you NEVER see the badges whether the tom is on the left or right). Looks like White cortex (formica) which is sort of a "blah" color but was very popular at the time. They probably look nice under stage lights. Cortex wears like iron so these may have held up pretty well. Probably 6 ply maple/poplar shells.

Those are rocker stands, circa 1986.

That snare seems fishy too. Not a ludwig supraphonic.

Good solid drums

Zildjians make it even better.

I like Drums...

Yeah the snare appears to be an 8 lugger so it's not a Supra. Looks like it has two rows of lines on the shell so possibly a cheap import. Hard to say.

My vintage Ludwig "orphans" kit started out life as a white cortex wrapped Rockers with classic lugs, and super classic floor tom, until i re-wrapped them in a very exclusive and unique wrap..

This may very well be 6 ply maple shells and may look to be early 80's judging from the 1 inch spurs, because i don't think Ludwig had thick spurs like that in the 70's, but i could be mistaken..

That snare drum looks like it may a Tama Swingstar from the same era, as those lines on the shell is indicative of early, lower budget Tama..In answer to one of your questions, the drums are worth much more than the cymbals..

I'm sure with fresh heads and good clean up, those drums will sound and look great..

Early 80's set. I bet they sound pretty good actually. The badge was moved to the back of the bass drum like that when Ludwig introduced the modular hardware. The mount was this big traingular piece and it had to be mounted to the front of the bass drum, moving the badge placement to the back. It drives me nuts because Ludwig has kept the badge placement there ever since and it is the one thing aesthetically that displeases me about new Ludwigs.

If a good price can be had for those I would say go for it!
