70's Ludwig Head scratcher. Last viewed: 1 minute ago

I'm a drum junkie, I would always buy.

But seriously, I've just looked into getting vertical grade Formica to wrap some orphan marching drums. And I honestly can't see anyone buying mahogany Formica to wrap their drums, especially to make just $500.

I like Drums...

1964 Leedy (Slingerland) Blue n Silver Duco
1964 Ludwig Club Date Sparkling Silver Pearl
1966 Ludwig Super Classic Sparkling Silver Pearl

1972 Slingerland 85N Pop outfit Light Blue Pearl
1976 Ludwig Vistalite clear

I envy you that road trip, and the kit looks to be a good deal at 500.

I bought a new Luddy Mahogany cortex kit in late 1977 early 78,I think the ser#were in the 16xxx range, all the drums were clear int except for the FT which was granitone, and all were 3 ply.I agree the kit is probably not a rewrap, but the dissapearing spur with a gullwing is just bizarre.Even for Ludwig.

One thing to consider is that the hole-spacing is the same for curved-spur brackets and the ubiquitous tom/cymbal-arm mounting brackets, the latter in this case in use with the gullwing spur.

So I'd check under the "gullwing bracket" for the curved spur hole...when you get them I mean. :)

Allright. Road trip over and drums are home. First off the road trip was a bit of a white knuckler for the first hour or so. We only got hit with two inches of snow, but it was all during the time that I had first set out. Once I got past that, I jammed me some Stones, Beatles, Jack White, KISS and Uncle Tupelo. I met the guy just outside of Kansas City and it was freezing. Needless to say the pick up was brief. After talking to the guy a bit more he admitted that he was the second owner and that the first owner had said it was original. Upon further examination I have to say that I am satisfied. The snare (Yamaha Stage Custom) is surprisingly crisp and sturdy. The bass drum legs actually match each other but they are both non period correct. An extra hole was drilled in each side of the bass drum to accommodate for this. I can only assume that the original owner did not like the 70's style legs and preferred the late sixties style which were installed on these. The bass drum hoops are in good shape but have inlays that are Walnut Cortex. The original hoops were also part of this transaction today. Those were a little bit rough and I can only assume that original owner purchased what he thought were matching hoops off of ebay only to find out that he actually had the mahogany cortex wrap. It's kind of cool to have both of these hoops. I still do not have an answer for the badge on the 8x12 tom, but the interior of these drums are flawless. They actually have almost a butter yellow look to them. The only question that I now have is the 9x13. The way it is cut almost reminds me of a Sonor or Premier tom in that it seems undersized by a 1/4 of an inch or so. All in all a great day and could not be happier with the condition and sound of the drums.
