70's Ludwig OBP Score! Last viewed: 1 second ago

Hi guys,

A friend of mine had " some old drums" that he was storing at his church. He wanted to get rid of them and told me I probably wouldn't want them. I, of course, told him I probably did :) and could he send me some pictures. Well, long story short, I pick them up and they appear to be late 70's Ludwigs in Oyster Black Pearl (the bowling ball version) in 22", 13", 16" configuration - blue Olive badges, speckled grey interiors, look to have an outer ply of mahogany. Also included is a '69 club date 12" tom in OBP (looks to be maple interior) and Ludwig Standard snare drum. The cherry on top is that he also has a bag of "cymbals that start with a Z" somewhere, which he believes to be vintage and will pass along when he finds them. Holy dream come true!

The drums are in good condition and will make a terrific players kit. A few of the issues I've noticed include: some of the badges are broken, there was a microphone jack installed in the bass drum, the wrap is lifted at some of the seems, and the strainer is broken on the Standard snare.

Ill try to get some pics up sometime today - can't wait to share them with you guys! Being a Slingerland guy, I dont know much about Ludwigs.....so if anyone wants to share any Ludwig wisdom after seeing the pics I am all ears!

Thanks so much and enjoy the pictures.

James

Here are a four pics of the floor tom and one of the 13 inch tom. Floor tom serial number is 1318351, which I believe dates it to late 70's (78? or 79?). According to Rob Cook's Ludwig book, these should be the mahogany, poplar, mahogany shells although I am not positive. There is definitely an outer ply of mahogony that can be seen in the bearing edge pics.

Here is the 12" tom that I think is from a Club Date outfit and the Standard snare. Serial number on tom reads 849379, dating it at 1969 (?). I believe the shell is maple, poplar, maple.

The serial on the snare is 33690. Does anyone know how to date the Standards? I know they were in production from 68-71, but is it possible to narrow that down?

Thanks for any help

Heres the bass drum with the crazy mic mounted inside. You can see the jack from the outside in the 4th pic. Anyone ever see anything like this before? There is also an extra hole mounted just beneath the badge....no idea if it is original or not and what it might have been used for. Badge is nearly gone, just a little bit of blue and olive left.

Here are some pics of the shells after cleaning with Novus 1 and 2. The shined up pretty nice!

Great score! It's not all the uncommon to have a mic mounted inside the kick drum especially in the early eighties with the advent of the MayEA system. Once we saw Simon Phillips suspending EV RE20's from wire rope inside his kick drums...

It was probably a shock to the guy that wired it when he figured out he had wired it backwards though.
