70s Slingerland Blue Lacquer (?) Kit Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Earlier today I stopped by to see a Slingerland kit of an acquaintance of mine, which was originally purchased and used by his father, sometime back in the '70s. All shells are 3-ply. The kit consisted of two 24" bass drums, 13" and 14" rack toms, a 16" (I believe) floor tom and a 6 1/2 x 14" Sound King snare.

The wrap was some sort of blue lacquer, which I had never seen previously. I've attached a few pics.

I'm trying to determine what this particular color was called, what would be the best method of cleaning this type of wrap, and whether Slingerland actually offered a kit in the sizes mentioned above from the factory back in the '70s. Any "words of wisdom" would be greatly appreciated. THANKS in advance for your time and your help.

THANKS for your time and your help, Mark. I appreciate it. I've used Meguiar's Color X on most of my pearl wraps (oysters and sparkles/glitters) with excellent results. Would it be same to assume that it work the same on this particular wrap?

Yes, Novus works great! Novus #1 is probably all you'll need. Never hurts to have both #1 and #2, just in case.

Thanks again. Final question, if I may -- Is it safe to assume that these kits with the solid gloss finishes didn't come with unpainted bass drum hoops? None of the wooden hoops that were mounted on the two bass drums I saw yesterday were painted and I was told that's how they were when the kit was purchased. I'm assuming the original owner of the kit must have removed the paint. All four of the hoops did have grooves cut into them for in-lay strips. Thanks again!

gary my yellow gloss kit has two bass drum also it came with black hoops on the front and yellow hoops on the back, I have seen two other yellow gloss kit they had yellow hoops front and back. all of them had chrome strips in the channels of the bass drum hoops. So yours probably had at least the chrome strips. the colored hoops anything is possible with slingerland.

Thanks again, Mark! I would have never thought "color-coded" hoops would have been factory-issued on those kits. Once again, I'm learning something new. That's why I love this forum and its fine members, like yourself.

Gary. kevin has a red gloss kit I can't remember if his hoops are red painted or black I'll ask him and have him chime in on this thread.

Slingerland offered the Jazz Rock outfit, 2x24 bass drums, 14 & 15 racks, and 16 & 20 floors.....but in your pic the bass has a tom mount....the jazz outfit would have virgin bass drums. Are you sure it was a double bass from the factory?
