70s Slingies hardware is stripped--what to do? Last viewed: 37 minutes ago

hello, folks--

this is my very first post here. i could not find the 'introduction' forum so hopefully i'm not breaking protocol from jump. sorry if so!

i purchased a (roughly) 1970-71 purple sparkle slingerland about a year back and finally got to set it up (needed good drum space). when mounting the 13" tom and tightening bass drum, i noticed the hardware was stripped or in the midst of stripping. this made fixed mounting impossible; bass drum was less of a hurdle but sound still suffered some.

do i have to hunt down vintage slingie hardware to remedy this or would a similar present-day screw/tension rod do the job? i'm having a hard time telling if the problem is the interior piece or the screw itself.

hopefully my pic link works. and apologies if i'm not getting the hardware terminologystraight--bit of a spaz in that department.

thanks in advance for your help--this looks like a great resource!

wow, thanks to you both!

blairndrums, i may very well take you up on that, because the vintage hardware site i checked is out of stock on those. i believe my PM function is on, so if you wish to discuss price, please send a note.

vintagemoore, correct. when i went to screw into place, screw just kept turning. it holds up to a point, but you really can't whack the tom. i resorted to positioning it against the soundfoam on the wall just so it'd stay in place long enough to play.

question regarding that set-o-matic: what's the story with adjusting tom angle? that also proved very challenging. it seems as though the whole top unit is at a fixed position. i couldn't really turn the toms to just the right angle for me.

one of my studio partners also has a mid-70s slingerland set, so i'm going to check in with him as well.

thanks again for your input!

You can repair your tom holder bolt hole with a Heli-Coil. You can get these thread repair kits at your local auto parts supply or hardware store.
