70's Vistalite concert toms and kick Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Loading...

First post and new member to the forum.

Around 1993 I purchased a set of old blue Vistalites from my local music store. The set contained a 22" kick, 16" floor tom, and 12" and 13" toms. The toms are concert toms, and I know they aren't particularly rare, as I see them on Ebay just about any time I look. How rare is it to have a Vistalite concert kick drum? I also have the original heads to the set that includes a kick drum head where the Ludwig sticker is backwards so that it can be read through the shell from the front.

I am not on here looking to sell them, or to get a value. Just a curious to the rareity as I have yet to see another kick drum like this one.

I played in various bands unti about 2002 using this set, and still have everything. The set did not have the snare.

I can't recall seeing a single-head Vistalite kick before, can you post some pics?

I feel embarrased the drum is so dirty.

The head is looking at the batter side.

can't really comment on the shells. Just a shout out to say Welcome to the forum.

And you made me look twice at the post. You have the same name as my son, so did a double take at first.

Ludwig do make the single headed bass drums like this. But they were custom order.I have seen a few of these vistalite sets with these bass drum most were Blue or Clear in color..

Is the floor tom a single headed tom too?

With the set in a common color of Blue with out the snare maybe 500.00 to 650.00 would be a fair price///Mikey

that is pretty uncommon.

the ludwig combo vistalites from 78-80 were concert toms. but even those had conventional bass drums. ive read that the bass drum was kept conventional on the vistalite series for the shell to support the ride toms without fear of cracking the bass drum shell.

on the combo series, whether vistalite or not, ludwig had a bass drum batter head that had the ludwig logo reading so that the person in front of the drums could read it. the combo series had combo badges though. i see yours has a blue olive badge.

i would agree with mikey that this must have been a special order. what is the serial number on your bass drum, for dating purposes?

The floor tom is concert as well.

When I bought the set the toms were mounted on the kick drum. It made me real nervous about cracking the kick drum shell, so I ended up mounting them on a stand instead. I ended up liking this configuration better anyway.

I will look at the serial numbers tonight when I get home. Thanks for the info guys!

I really need to get the set cleaned back up and repair any damaged hardware. Like I said in my original post, I could care less what they are worth, just want to know if what I got is pretty common, somewhat rare, or very rare.

justin

ive got a set of vistalite combos is blue like i mentioned earlier. i play mine one up and also don't mount the tom(s) on the bass. i use the double tom holder in a stand. have one tom mounted and a 17" crash cymbal on the other side of the mount.

I seem to recall a kit or two with single headed factory kicks. I certainly recall the reverse logo heads by perhaps those were common on Vistalite batters in general.

One thing to note, when you start cleaning those, be very careful as the amount of material that is built up on those shells will scratch them in the cleaning process. I might suggest removing the hardware and starting with a garden hose to wash off the majority of dirt. The water will not only clean off the dirt but lubricate the shell in the process as the dirt comes off. Just a thought. Otherwise I am afraid you will end up with "cloudy" shells and be disappointed with your efforts.
