A pleasant surprise with a kit or bunch of drums/parts you bought? Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Loading...

Maybe this goes into a different section because it is not actually about a vintage drum but yet it is something unexpected that came out of buying some vintage USA drums.

When I bought my black Rogers Big R XP8 set it came with a Pearl Chad Smith Signature snare. I didn't buy the set for the snare but it was basically a throw in and a bonus in my eyes

The black chrome look of the snare actually looked good with the black Rogers kit so I could see someone pairing them visually,

What was not expected was that I would really like the snare. It isn't vintage and it isn't an expensive snare but it is well built and sounds great great. I really dig it. When I bought the kit I kind of justified it by saying I could make up some of the difference by selling the snare. Well that isn't going to happen now.

Has anyone else had a similar pleasant surprise with something that was part of kit?

A few years ago...........April 2010, I bid on a Rogers XP10 6.5x14 maple SuperTen. More interested in the drum than buying but... I bid. Messaged the seller about any "history" on the drum......... His response, it belonged to Gina Schock of The Go-Go's. Information is not in the auction. I bid, and won at a very low price even for the drum. I received.. this

I bought a lot of drums from a gentleman that I met at a local music store. Mid 70's Thermogloss Ludwig with the 26 bass drum,16 and 18 floor toms but 13,14 concert toms. Bonus was the 22" Isty Zildian mid 50's ride cymbal and same era 15" hats.....

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

Just earlier this year, I responded to a CL ad where I could make out in 3 bad pictures a COB Dyna in the picture(s). It was about an hour and 15 minute hike but when I got there, it became worth the trip.

Sure, the Dyna was complete, mid 70's, still had the frame! There was also a 3 pc. set of 1966 Ludwig Super Classics in that mess. As well as some Zildjians. Got it all at a deal of a price too!

The Ludwigs were spray painted black, but I could see the potential in them. 12-16-20, and the 12" was date stamped Sept. 8 1966.

Cleaned up the Dyna and sold it on eBay. Completely restored the Ludwigs in OBP, they look like new.

Saved a Dyna, and a nice set of SC's!

Was at a Guitar Center and saw a cheap used student Pearl snare for $50 bucks that had brand new Mastercast($45 to 50 bucks a piece) die cast hoops.

Removed the good hoops and threw on a couple of old triple flange that I had laying around and it is actually is a decent sounding snare.

A couple of years ago I responded to a craigslist post in Calabasas CA. There it was a white Ludwig Octaplus set with lots of cymbals (Paistes, Ufips and Zildjians). The set came with a metal Tama swingstar snare drum. All for a very convenient price ($500). Out of curiosity I asked the guy what happened to the snare that came with the set. He said: "Oh, I got that one too somewhere…Lemme check." A couple of minutes later he came back with a 70's Ludwig Black beauty 6,5x14 snare on his hands…."Here. You can have it too"…I though I was dreaming!

I bought a 1963 set of silver sparkle Ludwigs back around 2005. 22,13,16 with an acro, tama snare, hardware, cymbals and old cases. I ended up paying $600 as that is what was advertised. One of the cymbals turned out to be a 22" K. Zildjian Istanbul ride that was in fantastic shape! I ended up using it for a number of years and then I ended up trading that one cymbal for the 1971 mod orange club date I have now. I think the guy I traded with eBayed that cymbal for around $1300-1400! The club date is not mint but I love it!

Some years back I got a Pearl Session Maple 24 bass,13" tom,16" floor tom with a 12" Pearl Steel Firecracker snare. Came with AAX hats, crash,& ride. Top of the line pearl hi-hat stand, snare stand, three booms. Iron Cobra single pedal. All for $500. The snare of all things really shocked me. For a 12" it's so crisp and articulate and loud. Acts like a 14". I love using it with smaller kits.

The best surprise I had though was when I bought a bunch of older rack and a stack of cymbals for $300. Wound up with my '70s 22" A Zildjian Light Ride & my '50s / '60s A Zildjian 14" hats. Those alone are worth what I paid for everything.

18 Kits & 40+ snares..

A few years ago I was asked if I wanted to buy a cheap Sonor drum kit with an old snare and old cymbals for 500€.

I turn up to have a look at the drum kit and it turns out that it is an alright Sonor Force 2000, with a 1960s and 1950s Zildjian Avedis cymbal set.

Last I saw the snare and stupidly didn't trust my eyes. It was in 1978 Ludwig 14x6,5 Black Beauty. Walking

Of course I bought it, sold the Sonor Kit, sold the cymbals, made some money,....

Of course I kept the Snare Yes Sir
