A tale of 3 Supras Last viewed: 1 hour ago

or possibly 2 Supers and 1 Supra.

I have always owned 2 Supra's

1. Pre-Serial with red felt baseball bat muffler crimped beds and rolled

edges. Drum weight 8 lbs 1.5oz

2. 1965 with white felt baseball bat muffler. Drum weight 7lbs 2.65oz

Between these 2 I always assumed I had 1 C.O.B. Super 400 (snare 1) and 1 Supraphonic Aluminum or Ludalloy or what have you (snare 2).

Then this weekend I picked up a third Super that was pre-serial round knob with crimped beds and rolled edges that weighed 9lbs 5oz.

So now I am wondering about my first pre-serial with red felt BB muffler and whether or not it is COB. I know that some with those same characteristics were in fact Luddalloy and not brass but being almost a full pound heavier than my 65 I assumed it was brass. Now with the new Super 400 that has been added to the collection at over 9lbs and obviously COB I am totally confused.

I am asking because initially I was going to sell the red felt as COB now that I have the new Super 400 but do not want to be misleading. If the red felt and the 65 are both in fact Ludalloy I may sell the 65. They are all in beautiful condition with no corrosion on the shell.

Any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I am not an expert but just speculating here.

Do both pre-serial's have brass hoops? That could change weight and the round knob if is brass also could add some but wouldn't think too much. Thinking #1 still could be Brass.

Maybe could try stripping them down to just the shells and weight them that way.

Like to hear what others have to say.

Here's an interesting video on the Super Ludwig COB.

They do both have brass hoops. I can't imaging the tone control making up the difference in weight but maybe part of it.

That video was great! I had heard or read most of that before but never the part about the different Imperial lugs. I need to look a little closer but the pre-serial with red felt appears to have the later lug but still the rolled inner edge. I am thinking that may account for the difference in weight between the earlier pre-serial (which has the earlier imperial lug) and the the red felt (with the later Imperial style lug) and that they both could be brass.
