Acrolite out of round.. Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Well, after putting on fresh heads on my '71 Acrolite for tonight's gig,

I noticed something depressing. The shell is out of round..When i first bought the snare, i noticed that the batter head was snug when putting it on the drum, but i just thought it was the head that needed to be stretched..I've only changed heads on this drum 3 times in 3 years, but i only noticed the shell being out of round just a few minutes ago..

The heads still tune up nicely, but it's disappointing to know that one of my favorite snare drums of all time is slightly, well..crooked..

In my plea for answers, i'm compelled to ask if anyone has experienced this and tried "fixing" the problem, or if there is any way to go about it? I know it's a long shot, but i just thought i'd ask..

Cheers,

Rob

First thought - it's been one of your favourites for 3 years as is, so do nothing.

Second - I would find some way to apply pressure in a controlled way to the shell until in-round.

HTH!

Normally, to apply steady pressure you would use thread rod through lug bolt holes at it`s widest and narrowest points to push and pull it back to round...It takes some measuring, but, it can be done...

I thought of that, but i don't have access to the proper tools to do so..

I would also have to agree with Mitch, that i probably should leave it as is..When i played it last night it still sounded great and tuned up perfectly.. I think i'm gonna have to accept my acro the way it is.

I remember reading an article on Duff McKagen from GnR in where he states his custom Fender bass guitars were all made with a slightly warped neck because one of his first Fender bass guitars was either broken and then badly repaired or that it was a stock defect, but he got so used to it, that he couldn't play any other bass unless it had that warpage to it.. So i guess i'll leave it as is.

Thanks for both of your inputs guys ! ;)

I agree as well to leave as is especially if it still tunes up ok...How much out of round is it?

Cheers

Only slightly, or else it probably wouldn't tune up as well..Very minor, and you'd have to really look at it in order to see it.. With that being said,

i guess i'll live with it, mojo flaws and all ;)

That was my question too!

It may not be out at all. Some drums, once both heads are taken off, appear to be "slightly" out of round, but put the bottom head on and tune it. Then flip it over and put it on the counter and it's perfectly flat. I've seen it multiple times.

I would think metal shells would certainly fall in this category morso than wood shell.

Be happy! Fixing wood shells out of round is no walk in the park, and often not worth it if you ask me.
