But that's what JHB Used? Why not a supra 402?
Acrolite Vintage Last viewed: 1 hour ago
Which era 402? I thought the new ones are not as good quality hardware as the vintage ones.
you can't go wrong with any era, My bud Kevins a member here I was just at his house I had my Brass 402 and he had his new ludalloy 402, his sounds fantastic, I've heard the same thing, the new hardware is good stuff, even though it's made in china. here's a good thread on another forum I'm a member of!http://www.drumforum.org/index.php?/topic/41389-got-my-first-supra-yesterday/page__pid__454953#entry454953
Thanks man
of cousre that's why we're here!Cool1
I have a '68 Acrolite and just bought a '78 from a VDF member (doublestroke kid - great bloke; excellent transaction BTW).
I love my 68 (keystone, p83, round muffler) - it has a lot of bottom end.
I helped recommend a 70s bare aluminium shell Acro to a mate of mine for his studio. When I played it, I was amazed at the extra breadth and top end. His is a mid or late 70s. When I saw Chris' great condition Acro, I jumped on it.
Received it yesterday and these are my observations:
- I didn't realise until now that the bare aluminium was a difference shade prior to the 'enamel finish' (which I've stayed away from due to the dryness)
- My 70s is brighter and a tad more open than the 60s Acro. The actual pitch of the 70s Acro shell is higher than my 60s when tapped.
This is just my experience, but these points apply to both the Supraphonics and Acrolites I have played:
- there are apples and oranges
- I believe there are always pitch differences in metal instruments. When I order cymbals from Sabian, I get them to send me two or three versions of each model, so I can choose a pitch that complements my setup.
- If you want an open, higher-pitched metal snare, then play a few Acros to find that sound!
- play them in person or get sound files if you can. I've been somewhat lucky with Acros, but I had four Supras before I realised that the first flaky one was the best sounding!
- I find P83s more workable than P85s. I might retrofit the 70s Acro...
Hope all this helps!
Thank you so much. I'm thinking of maybe sticking with a 60s Chrome Supraphonic LM402 (the real thing), and maybe a 60s or 70s Acrolite as well, just for fun. You only live once.

A 60s 402 Supra with a keystone badge? They're truly collector's items and hard to come by. I've only seen about 4 or 5 in two years (I grabbed one).
Here's one that didn't last long:
Here's mine:

A 70s might be easier to find and a tad cheaper. Go nuts and keep searching. It's all worth it.
Wow thanks man, How long were those on ebay for?
I am also looking for a 16" Floor Tom to complete a Bonham setup. What do you think about this one?
